turkey tips...
Try tunnel boning your turkey. The process
requires making small incisions and remov-
ing all the bones from the bird, stuffing it and
then baking it. Books said a quick search on
YouTube will provide step-by-step instruc-
tions. The technique cuts the cooking time
in half and allows the meat to retain moist.
Books recommends stuffing the bird with aro-
matics like herbs, lemon and garlic and bast-
ing it in butter.

Holistic Wellness 101
Discover all that New Seasons Market
wellness department has to offer
L
ooking for solutions to benefit opti-
mal health and beautiful skin? New
Seasons Market has a remedy for
you. The wellness department of
your neighborhood market offers thousands
of natural body products, supplements, vita-
mins and baby items to fit your lifestyle.
“The wellness department has always
been a strong pillar of New Seasons Market,”
said Assistant Wellness Merchandiser Joe
Flaherty. “It’s what differentiates us from
other stores that may have a slightly more
food focus.”
Flaherty has worked in the natural food
industry for ten years and with New Sea-
sons Market for six years. In his position,
he helps oversee all twelve wellness depart-
ments throughout Oregon and Vancouver.
Local wellness vendors offered at New Sea-
sons Market include Oregon’s Wild Harvest
herbal remedies from Sandy, OR., Alaffia
shea butter from Olympia, Wash., Wild Car-
rot Herbals body products from Enterprise,
OR., and Camamus soaps from Portland, OR.
Each wellness department is broken into two
departments, supplements and body care.
Under the umbrella of supplements, the
store carries everything from multi-vita-
mins, minerals, raw foods, protein powders,
food bars and nutritional oils. The company
recently expanded its raw foods section, and
now carries raw cashews, almonds, honey,
olives and a variety of USDA organic and
Non GMO food items.
“We are really excited about our raw food
products,” Flaherty said. “It’s a popular cate-
gory right now. We have a customer base that
islookingtoincludepure,unadulteratedfoods
in their diet and we feel like we are answer-
ing that demand in thewellness department.”
Under the umbrella of body care, the store
carries everything from hair care products,
body lotions, face care, essential oils, soaps
and first aid items. Each wellness depart-
ment also staffs a body care specialist, who
is capable of answering questions about in-
gredients and identifying body products that
benefit individualized skin types.
“The body care specialists are really
hands-on and interactive with customers,”
Flaherty said. “They are willing to spend
as much time as needed, to ensure that you
get the right product for your skin type.”
While New Seasons Market carries many
organic, plant-based holistic health and body
care products, the wellness department also
differentiates itself from other markets with
the breadth of its selection.
“We also carry conventional products
throughout our department,” Flaherty said.
“If a customer is looking for Tylenol, low
dose aspirin, or Dove soap we offer it. We
like to cover all the basics and allow the cus-
tomer to make the decision for themselves.”
Flaherty notes, however, that the wide va-
riety of products sometime leave customers
perplexed in the aisles. When in doubt, he
encourages customers to ask questions, try
samples and seek out resources within the
department.
“We have really friendly, knowledgeable
staff,” Flaherty said, noting wellness em-
ployees receive regular training and product
education. “Customer service is our primary
focus. We like our staff to be well versed
and have a good working knowledge with
the products we sell so that when a custom-
er comes in with questions, we can provide
a clear picture for the customer and allow
them to make the best choice.”
