Meet our team of doctors:
• Dr. Geoffrey Baum D.O.
Dr. Geoffrey Baum is a Board Certified Or-
thopaedic Surgeon and has been practicing or-
thopedics in Oregon since 1984.
Dr. Baum is an active staff member of Provi-
dence Milwaukie Hospital and the East Port-
land Surgical Center. He practices general or-
thopedics, with special emphasis on the surgical
treatment of knees and hands.
Dr. Baum received his undergraduate degree
at Oklahoma State University, where he won
two NCAA wrestling championships. He re-
ceived his medical degree from Michigan State
University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine
in East Lansing, Mich. His residency was done
at Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital in the Detroit
suburbs. Dr. Baum is an attending physician for
the OSAA wrestling championships.
In his free time, Dr. Baum enjoys racquetball,
cycling, and wood working.
• Dr. Bret Kean, MD
Dr. Kean is committed
to excellence in the care of
shoulder and knee prob-
lems. He employs the most
current arthroscopic and
open surgical techniques
to manage a wide spectrum
of shoulder and knee disor-
ders. The compassionate and competent care of
patients is one of his primary missions.
Dr. Bret T. Kean is fellowship-trained in
Orthopedic Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy,
He is able to offer his patients techniques and
treatment paradigms that are at the forefront of
shoulder and knee surgery.
Dr. Kean received his M.D. at Jefferson Med-
ical College. He then headed westward com-
pleting his residency at Case Western Reserve
University in Ohio, followed by a fellowship
in sports medicine/arthroscopic surgery at the
University of Utah. While a visiting instructor
he helped cover the University’s collegiate ath-
letes (women’s soccer, men’s football, and ski
team events).
Dr. Kean is interested in anatomic double
bundle ACL reconstructions, care of the winter
athlete, fracture care, and arthroscopic shoulder
surgery.
In his free time, Dr. Kean’s interests include
spending time with his family, running and skiing.
• Dr. Paul Ruesch, MD
Dr. Paul Ruesch at-
tended medical school at
Wayne State University in
Detroit, Michigan and is a
Board Certified, Fellowship
trained orthopedic surgeon.
Dr. Ruesch specializes in
Sports Medicine and the Arthroscopic treat-
ment of knee and shoulder injuries. He specifi-
cally excels in meniscus repair, anterior cruciate
ligament reconstruction, rotator cuff repair, and
shoulder instability procedures. Dr. Ruesch is
confident in treating arthritis of the shoulder,
knee and hip from a joint preserving and replac-
ing perspective. He is also experienced in treat-
ing fractures and musculoskeletal injuries.
Prior to relocating to Oregon, Dr. Ruesch
practiced at Orthopedics Indianapolis in Ko-
komo, Indiana, where he served as Chief of
Surgery for St. Joseph Hospital. Dr. Ruesch
was also involved with the care of professional
hockey teams, the orthopedic coverage of Big
Ten Women’s Basketball, and the World Police
and Fire games.
Dr. Ruesch is on staff at Providence Mil-
waukie Hospital, Mount Hood Medical Center,
and East Portland Surgery Center.
Away from the operating room, Dr. Ruesch
enjoys spending time with his family, skiing,
bike riding, and water sports.
• Dr. Matt Sugalski, M.D.
Dr. Sugalski is a Board
Certified Orthopaedic Sur-
geon with fellowship train-
ing in Sports Medicine. His
commitment to excellence
and to our community is ex-
emplified by his role as the
Chief of Surgery at Providence Milwaukie Hos-
pital. He has extensive subspecialty training in
Sports Medicine, arthroscopy, and joint replace-
ment; and has a special interest in shoulder and
knee surgery.
Dr. Sugalski studied medicine at Columbia
University in New York City and completed
his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery. While at
Columbia, he devoted one year to the research
of shoulder anatomy and biomechanics result-
ing in numerous scientific publications in the
orthopaedic literature.
Following his residency, Dr. Sugalski com-
pleted a fellowship in Sports Medicine in Min-
neapolis, MN. There he enjoyed the privilege of
working with the team doctors of the Minnesota
Vikings (NFL), Twins (MLB), Timberwolves
(NBA), Wild (NHL), and Lynx (WNBA).
Dr. Sugalski was a competitive rower in col-
lege and has continued to enjoy sportsmanship
and the great outdoors.
