Couple opens Advanced Orthopedic Physical Therapy
W
hen they crossed
paths in Chap-
man University’s
doctor of physical therapy
program 10 years ago, Nate
and Amy Phelps shared the
common goals of becoming
successful members of the
physical therapy community
and eventually opening a pri-
vate physical therapy prac-
tice. In February, that dream
was realized with the opening
of Advanced Orthopedic
Physical Therapy in the Coy-
ote Place building behind
Burger King in Newberg.
This husband and wife
team resides in Dundee with
their two lively daughters,
Brynley, 4, and Mariella, 3.
They have been treating pa-
tients in the area for nine
years.
“Our girls have been the
driving force to focus our ca-
reer efforts locally,” Amy
said. “I truly value the impor-
tance of family and wanted to
be closer to home during the
day so I can be available to
my girls as we prepare for the
kindergarten transition next
year. We desire this family
friendly focus to also ring
true for our patients.”
Though their goals are
similar, the couple has varied
experience in several facets
of physical therapy. Amy has
specialized experience in pe-
diatrics, infant massage,
women’s health and geri-
atrics. Nathan has been clinic
director at Ability Physical
Therapy in McMinnville for
nine years and holds a spe-
cialty license in orthopedics,
which few physical therapists
hold in Oregon.
“Because we treat all ages
we are well equipped to keep
the youngest members of the
family content while mom or
dad receives therapy servic-
es,” he said. “We are doing
our best to create a relaxing
and family friendly atmos-
phere so that our patients feel
comfortable, welcome and
are given the opportunity for
direct one on one treatment.
Our small business model al-
lows us the opportunity to
avoid the trend of shuttling
patients through the clinic to
meet numbers. It’s different
here. We are providing quali-
ty patient education on their
condition and how to manage
pain or prevent reoccurrence,
providing skilled manual
treatment, building strength
and endurance for tasks that
are meaningful and allow for
full participation in work and
recreational activities. But
that is not all. We are build-
ing relationships that allow
us to serve our patients more
effectively.”
