Cupcakes no more
T
he reasons go hand in hand.
After a surprise notice that their
lease would not be renewed
Sept. 28, Sweetest Thing Cupcakes has
closed its doors. But Cel Phillips, shop
manager, said low sales also contributed
to the closure.
“Our foot traffic wasn’t as good as
what we were hoping for,” Phillips said.
“We have our regulars who love us, but
the location is really difficult.”
Sweetest Thing Cupcakes was located
at 2501 Portland Road, at an intersection
that required a turn off of the main road.
“We’re going to refocus things and re-
organize things and look at our options at
other locations outside Newberg,” she
said. “Maybe Sherwood, Tigard, King
City-type areas. Somewhere that’s easier
to get to.”
The shop opened a little more than
four years ago and two years ago expand-
ed into a kiosk at Bridgeport Village,
with the possibility of a Washington
Square location. But when ownership
changed hands in July, the Bridgeport lo-
cation closed as well.
Phillips said they were not given any
reason as to the non-renewed lease, and it
was “a shock to the system.”
“It was our family. Our home away
from home for a lot of us that we loved
and cherished and really gave it our all,”
she said. “It’s hard. It’s especially hard
with a lot of people coming in and buy-
ing stuff. We had great staff and great,
great, great customers, so we’re hoping
to do something for the customers again.”
The shop had a “going out of busi-
ness” sale the first week of October to
jettison items they couldn’t store, includ-
ing baking equipment and décor.
The shop has asked customers to send
any questions or suggestions for new
shop locations to
thingcupcakes.com.
