Curiosities A Vintage Mall
offers an assortment of goodies
By Scott Keith
I
f your idea of the perfect afternoon is to
search through a massive collection of vin-
tage, antique items, you’re in luck. A store
that opened in April in Beaverton, just off
Canyon Road, will easily satisfy your curiosity.
Curiosities A Vintage Mall is owned by Travis
Diskin. It includes just about every collectible you
can think about.
According to Diskin, a vintage mall is a place
where dealers of goods and collectibles come to-
gether to share space and sell their items.
“Currently, we have 45 dealers in 6,000 square
feet of shopping space,” Diskin said, adding that
you’ll find a broad and eclectic range of items for
sale that include antique tools, advertising, fash-
ion and housewares. Unlike your typical antique
store, each dealer has a space to sell their items.
Diskin started getting curious about old items
at a young age.
“From knocking around my grandfather’s shop,
he would restore Model T and Model A Ford
trucks and stuff,” Diskin said. “I would always be
playing around in that stuff and just wondering
what these devices were.”
Diskin tried some other jobs before settling in
at his Beaverdam Road location.
“I started managing movie theaters at a very
early age,” Diskin said. “I went all over the state,
managing movie theaters for then Luxury The-
aters.”
Young people are looking for old items, he said.
“The young love to shop old,” Diskin said. “They
are looking at these items that have stories and
still have intrinsic value as well as great utility.
They would rather buy something that has that
character, rather than buy a cookie cutter item
from a ‘big box’ that they’ll have to replace in a
year. These things have stood the test of time and
still have their value.”
You’ll notice that the dealers at Curiosities have
unique names: Gary’s Tool Chest, Patina Pizzaz,
Vintage Bombshell, to name a few.
“I try to encourage people to have a name for
their busines,” said Diskin. “They’re a business
within a business here.”
Gary’s Tool Chest has tools that go back to the
1800s, according to Diskin.
Roam the mall and you’ll find an old typewriter
(yes, there was actually an era before computers)
or a vintage movie poster.
“Old tin toys have been pretty popular,” Diskin
said. “There are a lot of people who just love to see
those things back in their original condition.”
Diskin is happy that he moved into his present
building.
“It was great to find this location,”he said. “We
have an amazing mid-century building that was
open, fresh and ready for this kind of business.”
Diskin is noticing that customers like to furnish
their homes with vintage merchandise.
“This last weekend, I had several 20- to 30-year-
olds come in. They just moved into new complex-
es, Diskin said. “They want people to have a
unique experience when they come into their
homes. They’re looking for unique furniture and
home decor items.”
Young and old enjoy searching for that hard-to-
find vintage item.
“It truly is across the board,” Diskin said, point-
ing out that mid-century furniture and mid-centu-
ry furnishings are really popular now.
Diskin enjoys building his business. “The thing
that’s most joyful to me is to be able to build a
business where a lot of local dealers can supple-
ment their income, can sell things to people who
want to buy local.” Diskin also wants people to
find the utility of the items.
Customers, according to Diskin, “won’t be dis-
appointed with what they find here. They’ll be able
to find something that they can fall in love with.”
FLEA MARKET COMING
What: On June 15, Curiosities A Vintage Mall, will host a
flea market outside the store. About 50 people will bring
items to the mall, for sale. Flea Market hours will be 10
a.m. to 4 p.m.
