Bali Home Furnishings brings
quality products to Tualatin
By Scott Keith
J
ava and Bali may seem like exotic, far-
away destinations, but you can bring a
little bit of Indonesia into your living
room by visiting Bali Home Furnish-
ings in Tualatin and chatting with owner
Norm Keller.
In business since 2003, Bali Home Furnish-
ings offers teak products, including dining ta-
bles, chairs, desks, shelves, screens and cabi-
nets.
“We are, I think, one of the more unique
home furnishing shops around in that we im-
port solid teak furniture out of Indonesia,”
Keller said. “The indoor furniture is re-
claimed, which is a very green resource — it
has already been cut, some of it 200 years ago.
It’s being used instead of a new tree.”
The products are reclaimed out of old struc-
tures, such as buildings, bridges and barns.
Teak is a wood that continues to improve
with age. “Teak has the highest natural oil
content — which allows no water penetration,
no rotting. Insects don’t like to eat it, because
of the oil,” said Keller.
Teak is a product you don’t find in a lot of
stores.
“The price of teak is so high,” said Keller. “I
was looking on Craigslist today, and some-
body was selling teak for $70 a board foot.”
Keller said his teak wood is not a rainforest
resource but is a tree that’s in great supply in
Indonesia because of the plantations.
“It’s not like they’re cutting down rain for-
ests,” Keller pointed out.
Bali Home Furnishings has outdoor furni-
ture that’s plantation-grown, kiln-dried teak,
Keller said.
“It’s beautiful outdoor furniture which real-
ly is a lifelong investment. It’s something
that’s going to last for generations, quite
frankly.”
Keller and his co-owner wife, Jana, travel to
Indonesia at least once a year on a buying
trip.
“We go to Bali where we visit a village
called Ubud,” Keller said. “There are literally
thousands of small family ‘mom and pop’
shops that do the ducks, or they specialize in
baskets — we go into hundreds of shops to
source the crafts. We have those packaged,
wrapped and put on a truck (for the two-day
trip) to Java, where they’re consolidated with
the furniture that we buy.”
Pots, great for the garden, are another pop-
ular product offered at the Tualatin shop.
“We’ve been bringing in containers of pots
from both Vietnam and China for the last five
years,” Keller said. “The two best pots come
from Vietnam and China. They’re high-fired,
meaning they get up to about 1,800 degrees.”
Bali Home Furnishings also offers an uphol-
stery shop where you’ll find Barb Riley, who
has been in the upholstery business all her
life, helping customers. A few years back, Bali
added a cabinet shop. You’ll see artisan Alex
Velazquez there working with his brother-in-
law and his son.
It’s been a decade since Bali Home Furnish-
ings opened in Tualatin. Keller likes the com-
munity.
“It’s been a great location for us,” Keller
said. “We have absolutely a ton of repeat busi-
ness. As customers have gotten to know us,
they like not only our product, but our ser-
vice. We basically will do whatever it takes to
make them happy.”
Business has, in fact, been picking up for
Keller, thanks in part to expanded space and
word of mouth.
“Our best two years have been the last two
— we have a very strong following, and word
of mouth has definitely kicked in for us,”
Keller said, pointing out that his business has
taken part in the popular Street of Dreams.
Customers come to Bali Home Furnishings
from throughout the Pacific Northwest.
“We pull from as far away as Eugene, Van-
couver and Seattle. Our Internet sales have
really started to pick up as well,” Keller said,
adding that his store ships primarily to the
lower 48 states.
Keller said he offers unique, high-quality
products at a very reasonable price, and he
calls his business “world treasures from afar.”
