Welcome to the Portland International Auto Show
President, Metro Portland New Car Dealers Association
On behalf of Portland’s New Car Dealers, I want to thank you for attending and
welcome you to what promises to be our best show ever.
One of the things I enjoy most about Portland’s show is seeing the innovations
on display. A world of great vehicles, connectivity and interactions
awaits you. The show will educate, astonish and entertain you.
This year, we not only get to see the latest cars, but we get
to celebrate the resurgence of the auto industry. America’s auto
industry has reinvented itself for the 21st century. Economic
data shows America’s manufacturing sector is spearheading our
economic recovery, adding jobs in both 2010 and 2011. Until last
year, the U.S. hadn’t added manufacturing jobs since 1997.
• Today, each of the Big Three — General Motors, Chrysler, and Ford — is
yielding a profit for the first time since 2004;
• Today, each is gaining market share for the first time since 1988;
• Today, each is adding shifts and creating jobs at the fastest rates in memory;
• Today, manufacturers that you may have been conditioned to think of as
imports, Honda, Toyota, Mercedes Benz, Hyundai, BMW and Kia are now
building vehicles in the United States;
• Today, experts project that car companies will add more than 60,000 U.S. jobs
next year, and 190,000 by 2015.
So, as you read about, and see firsthand, the amazing new vehicles at the 2012
Show, remember they represent more than just four wheels and an engine. They
represent American factories bustling and humming; American workers back to
work; and local families once again earning paychecks.
On display in the Oregon Convention Center this week is more than just an
impressive new fleet of cars and trucks; it’s a vision of America in recovery!
What drives you.
