e theme of SummerFest this year is “Celebrate Local
History”, and this is re ected in the parade awards. is
year judges will bestow prizes upon three parade entries
in honor of three gures from Troutdale’s past.
Captain John Harlow was a former sea captain and a
Portland businessman. In 1872 he purchased part of a
land claim from D. F Buxton. Because he raised trout in
ponds on his farm, he called his farm “Troutdale”. He is
credited with convincing the railroad to build a depot by
his farm to ship his produce, and the depot served as the
kernel of a growing town. e Harlow House Museum is
the former house of John’s son, Fred. e

Lieutenant William Broughton was part of the expedition
lead by Captain George Vancouver up the Columbia River
in the autumn of 1792. It was this expedition that named
Mt. Hood. Broughton’s Bu , immediately across the
Sandy River from Troutdale, was later named in
Broughton’s honor. e

or commercial organization.
Women won the right to vote in Oregon in 1913. Two
years later, Clara Latourell Larsson became Troutdale’s
mayor, one of the rst women to be elected a mayor in
Oregon. She served in city government in a variety of
positions until shortly before her death in 1939. e

BILL FLYNN
is author of the Shut Down series:
Shut Down, Buck

First Journey
. He has served the city
in many ways, most recently as the chair of the Citizen’s
Advisory Committee.
DONNA ERWIN
is the owner of the
Columbia River Gallery. She founded Troutdale’s First
Friday Art Walk and the Bite & Bluegrass Festival, and is
currently helping with the 2013 West Columbia Gorge
Chamber of Commerce’s regional event, the Fall Foliage
Studio Tour.
DAVE SALESKY
is a meteorologist with
KATU. He was the 2008 Associated Press Best
Meteorologist, the 2011 Oregon Association of
Broadcasters Best Meteorologist, and a 2010 and 2011
Emmy nominee for best weather anchor.
HANNAH BANANA & FRIENDS
Hannah Banana will be joined by a giant banana and
some other clown friends, too, strolling about Glenn
Otto park entertaining as they go. You can expect balloon
twisting, harmonica playing, candy and lots of fun!
