THE PILOTS AND THEIR BALLOONS
powered parachutes, airplanes, helicopters
and enjoys sky diving — but loves the chal-
lenge and joy of sharing hot-air ballooning
with thousands the world over. As the
founder and executive director of Chryslis,
a nonprofit corporation, and the Dream
Catcher Balloon Program, her ambition is
to bring a “lift” to special needs, disabled,
wounded warriors, “other-abled” individual
and use this specially built, handicapped-
accessible hot-air balloon for educational,
awareness and flights of joy for those who
would not be able to climb into a basket.
Her goal of sharing the joy of flight and em-
powering a special community nationwide
can be viewed at dreamcatcherballoon.org.
Known as the Peter Pan for adults, Captain
Crystal’s true passion is to teach all individ-
uals to play like children.
LAURA HANCOCK, MORNING GLORY
— Lau-
ra has been ballooning since the mid-’90s.
She served as
vice presi-
dent of the
Willamette
Aerostat So-
ciety and
president
and vice
president of
the 45th Par-
allel Balloon
Club. A com-
mercial pilot
and balloon
owner, she
has put on
several bal-
looning classes and crew schools and orga-
nized the Northwest Balloon Safety Semi-
nar the past four years. She attends several
rallies in Oregon and Washington, includ-
ing the Loose Goose festival at the Ever-
green Air Museum in McMinnville, which
she is organizing.
Laura also is on staff with The Great Re-
no Balloon Race.
JEFF HALICZER, OFF THE WAL
l — My story
is not much different than most pilots. I had
never seen
a balloon
untill I got
my first
chance to
crew and a
note. It
was a
number of
years later
that I
earned my
private
certificate,
then com-
mercial
and got my first shaped balloon. I have done
a couple of U.S. tours during the past four
summers, but now it is time to stay closer
to home until after I retire my “day job” as
a special education teacher. I own and fly a
regular round balloon nearly every week-
end and two special shaped balloons, Off
the Wall and HighTopFlier. I average about
75 hours a year, just because I can.
KEARNEY DAVIS, KEARNEY’S MISTRESS
Hi, my name is Kearney Davis, and I fly Ke-
arney’s Mistress. My wife named the bal-
loon, as it is
the only thing
I can spend
money on
other than
her. We have
flown in this
event and ma-
ny others
across the na-
tion and love
ballooning.
We recently
moved to Bat-
tle Ground,
Wash., so this
event would
be a great one as the travel time is short. I
have been involved in ballooning for 25
years and a pilot for 17.
JOHN CAVIN, SPUNKY
— After driving
race cars for 10 years, John was looking for
an inexpensive way to get the same thrill.
That’s when, in 1979, he came upon hot-air
balloon racing. It was an adventure from
the begin-
ning, and
John has
been flying
ever since. In
1996, John be-
came the
owner of one
of the most
unusual bal-
loons on the
planet. In
fact, the bal-
loon looks as
if it came
from another
planet. After
talking with
Shep Wooley, the recording artist who
wrote and sang the 1958 hit song “Flying
Purple People Eater,” John knew he had a
great name for his unique, eye-catching bal-
loon. Last year, John added another eye-
catching balloon to his air force. Spunky
the skunk. Spunky and the Eater invade 18
hot-air balloon festivals a year to thrill kids
of all ages.
MICHAEL BLUM, BEEMSTER
— Michael
currently serves as president of the USA di-
vision of Beemster Cheese, which is a
Dutch brand of cheese produced for more
than 100 years by a historic cooperative of
farmers who live in a UNESCO World Heri-
tage location north of Amsterdam. Working
with communities nationwide has enabled
Michael to build the Beemster brand from
scratch and establish it within the U.S. Mi-
