Jiahuan Huang doesn’t just
believe in the American Dream,
he’s living it! At age 5 he and
his family left China and moved
to the United States where they
believed there would be more
opportunities. “When Mt. Hood
Community College Instructor
Jerry Lyons spoke to my
automotive class at Benson High
school I decided right then and
there that I was going to enroll
in the Mount Hood Community
College Automotive Technology
Program because I knew it would
provide me with opportunities for
career growth in a field I loved
and ultimately, if I worked hard, I
just might achieve my part of the
American Dream” said Jiahuan.
“I was impressed that
MHCC is one of only a handful
of colleges in the country that
offer training with three different
automotive manufacturers
(Ford Asset, Chrysler CAP and
Honda PACT). There’s also an
Individualized Mechanical Program
of Repair for students
who want a more generic
background.”
Jiahuan chose the
Ford Asset Program and
values the experience
he’s getting as an intern
at Landmark Ford.
“One of the things I love
most is that I alternate
each term between
my classroom
studies and
working in the
‘real world’ at
the dealership.
In other words,
I’m always
getting an
opportunity to apply
what I learn at school
to an actual work
environment. Plus, I
get to take advantage
of the knowledge and
experience of auto techs
that have been in the
business a long time.
They not only teach me
about cars, they teach me
about life. And that’s pretty
valuable stuff,” smiled the
nineteen- year-old.
When Jiahuan graduates
in August with an Associate of
Applied Sciences degree he will
go to work full time for Landmark
Ford. “That’s the beauty of this
program. I not only get paid
for my internship, I have a job
waiting after I receive my diploma.
That’s pretty amazing when you
think about it. I know kids who
have a master’s degree and flip
hamburgers because they can’t
get a job in their field.”

Removing his black work gloves,
Jiahuan leans against the Ford
Mustang he’s currently working on
and says, “I owe a lot to my family,
instructors, mentor and Northwest
Motorsports Association for helping
me achieve my American Dream. My
parents taught me how to work hard,
my instructors and mentor gave me
the knowledge and experience I
need to be successful and Northwest
Motorsports provided financial
resources to help me keep that
dream alive. Who knows, some day
I may be an automotive engineer or
designer.”
- QUOTE FROM LANDMARK
Vern Ferris, Northwest Motorsports Association,
discusses scholarships his organization provided
Jiahuan as a result of Rockin’ Round the Block event.
