For those who love
their neighborhoods,
but whose homes
no longer fit their
needs, this is a
wonderful example
of how a seemingly
inadequate house can be transformed
into a dream home.
What once was a small, dated and
cramped single-story house with an
unfinished basement is now redesigned
into a spacious and stately Portland
foursquare perfect for family living. We
began by saving three-
quarters of the existing
house and re-purposing
the rooms. The existing
living room was divided to create a
formal entry and dining room. The front
bedroom and bath were kept, and now
serve as an office and guest bath.
The unfinished basement is now
finished with a large rec room and laundry
room. The old kitchen and back bedroom,
which made up the remainder of the
house, was removed along with the roof.
The house was then expanded out the
back to create a large kitchen that opens
to a spacious family room, which looks
out on a new deck and big back yard.
To complete the home, a full second
story was added that has three generous
bedrooms, a large hall bath and a
beautifully appointed master suite with a
fireplace, walk-in closet and master bath.
Cherry cabinets and granite countertops
are some of the beautiful contemporary
finishes that are tastefully combined
with traditional oak floors and craftsman
carpentry to blend old-world details with
modern amenities. Wide overhanging
eaves, mitered lap siding at the corner
and craftsman exterior trim details
imbue the home with charm and a solid,
timeless sensibility, while also respecting
the existing architecture of this lovely,
established neighborhood.
From cramped and outdated to
spacious and beautiful, this home shows
how smart design accommodates
the changing needs of today’s family.
Definitely a tour must-see!
