T
he Party in the Park will once
again have a vintage rock ‘n’ roll
soundtrack to set the tone for The
Classic at T-Hills car show.
Sol-Mars will get the crowd grooving on
The Classic at T-Hills stage from 10 a.m. to
noon as the band plays a blend of instru-
mental surf music, Beach Boys’ classic hot-
rod tracks as well as its own surfing vocal
songs.
The name “Sol-Mars” is from the Spanish
words “sun” and “sea.”
“We felt this was relative to surfing back
in the early ’60s, when there were many
surf bands in Southern California,” says
Dale Fortune, who plays lead and rhythm
guitar.
The band formed in 1961, when the mem-
bers were in their teens and attending the
same junior high and high schools in Santa
Ana, Calif. Since then, Fortune has been
playing gigs with drummer Kenny Jones,
bass guitarist Lee Rengert and guitarist
Richard Jones. Sol-Mars plays high-energy,
fun music for crowds to listen and dance to.
The Shifterz will have crowds rockin’ the
afternoon away from 1 to 3 p.m. They know
just where to find the “surf knob” hidden
behind the re-verb dial of their vintage tube
amplifiers.
The Shifterz are a family-friendly 1950s
and ’60s rock ‘n’ roll band, mixed with a va-
riety of lost-in-time surf rock hits, creating
a unique genre called “Surf-N-Roll.” The
band captures all the malt shop and sock-
hop favorites with a little taste of “Paradise
Road” — as named in “American Graffiti —
thrown into the mix.
Let this lively group transport you back
in time to those hot summer nights, cruis-
ing the strip with the top down and Wolf-
man Jack blaring over the speakers.

Gear up for vintage,
feel-good rock ‘n’ roll
like it. I think they thought it was a little iffy.
After a month, we all agreed, it was a great
color!
The gentleman we had lined up to do the
interior wanted us to design it. Not having
done this before, I had several copies of a
seat made and doodled until we came up
with a design modeled after a design on a
motorcycle tank at the 2005 Roadster Show.
We took the painted can to an upholstery
supply shop and picked out three shades of
grey, and the end result is we love it!
The truck has won many awards including
Best in Show at Les Schwab’s show in Es-
tacada; Class Winner in 2005 and 2010 at the
Portland Roadster Show; Best in Class in
2009 at the Wild Horse Resort and Casino in
Pendleton; Trick Truck Award at Cruise the
Gorge last year; and, of course, Best in Show
at the 2012 Classic at T-Hills, where we had
to fit a 52-inch trophy in the back of the
truck while driving home.
Classic:
‘That’s the
color. That’s it.‘
