• 2013 NW NATURAL PARADE OF HOMES
By Christopher Hoag
Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery
This year’s NW Natural Parade of Homes
showcases the latest in design, building and
décor trends. These trends are especially
evident in the beautiful kitchens on display
where no detail was overlooked. Christopher
Hoag, ShowroomManager at Ferguson Bath,
Kitchen & Lighting Gallery, shares some rel-
evant kitchen trends that can be viewed at
the Bella Villa Homes 1, 2, and 3.
Professional grade appliances.
Once
only found in commercial kitchens,
professional grade appl iances are
popular in today’s kitchens. Homeowners
love the high-end look and superior per-
formance. They are often a focal point of
the kitchen and homeowners are willing to
spend more of their budget on quality appli-
ances. Electrolux’s Icon series, as seen in the
kitchens in Homes 1 and 3, is a good choice
for beautifully-designed, professional grade
appliances.
Column refrigerators and freezers.
Designers are increasingly splitting
up the refrigerator and freezer and
placing them in two separate work areas of
the kitchen. Manufactures are supporting
this trend by introducing refrigerator and
freezer columns that come in a variety of
widths and heights. This is a truly custom-
ized look that allows for more f lexibility in
the overall design. The kitchen in Home 2
features Frigidaire Professional All Refriger-
ator and All Freezer and demonstrates this
trend beautifully.
Transitional style.
The overall de-
sign esthetic of many homes has be-
come a mix of traditional and con-
temporary. Homes have become a bit more
casual and the transitional style ref lects this
trend. The Bella Villa homes mix a number
of design styles – from traditional to rustic –
that blend beautifully to illustrate a unique
transitional style.
Oil rubbed bronze.
The beauty and
charm of oil rubbed bronze is popu-
lar in the Northwest region. The fin-
ish has a warmth that works perfectly with
the overall design style of this year’s homes.
Oil rubbed bronze plumbing and light fix-
tures can be seen in many of the homes as
an alternative to the traditional chrome or
brushed nickel finishes.
Layering of Lighting.
Creating a lay-
ering effect with lighting is very pop-
ular in the design industry. It adds
interest to any room and is also very useful.
For example, combining recessed lighting
with pendants over a island or bar and un-
dercabinet task lighting have a big impact on
the overall look of the kitchen.
