In addition to Cooper, the
Cougars have lots of juniors with
plenty of court time under their
belts to help keep the team at the
top of the league.
Luke Carter is now 6-foot
five-inches tall, Nofziger said.
“He’s gotten better every year.”
Then there’s Ben Grandle,
who will mostly play wing.
“He’s kind of my shooter,
Nofziger said. “He’s grown over
the years.”
Grandle does tower over a few
of the other Cougars. Outside of
his height, he’s also got a couple
years of play behind him. “The
last couple years have been bene-
ficial,” Grandle said. “I learned a
lot of from the juniors and sen-
iors ahead of me.”
Also playing wing, Jordan
Syphard will most likely “step up
this year and be a big part of the
picture,” Nofziger said. “He has
all kinds of athletic ability.”
Then there’s Avery Nofziger
as well. He missed half of last
season due to a knee injury, but
Coach Nofziger said he made a
full comeback and may be start-
ing as point guard.
Mitchel Sandberg is also
returning. “He’s on of the gritti-
est players on the team,” Coach
Nofziger said. “He’s got a motor
that won’t quit. He’s made huge
strides.”
With Cooper Nofziger step-
ping in as a leader on the court,
and the talent of the junior class,
the Cougars are looking at anoth-
er good season, one that will
probably press into state play-
offs.
The main focus for Coach
Nofziger right now, is to get in
as many practices before they
begin playing tough preseason
games that will help sharpen
them up for league play.

“They need to focus on
this season and be
competitive,” Wiesner said.
Wiesner is building team
unity, while supporting a
family atmosphere, he said.
“I want them to feel comfort-
able in their own skin.”
The goal is to get them to
focus on the game. With a
roster heavy in freshmen and
sophomores, the seniors will
be looked upon for leadership
on the court.
“We’re predominately a
young program,” Wiesner
said. “[But] the seniors will
give us great stability and
leadership.”
Already, Wiesner said he’s
seen the older girls leading
the younger. The team needs
to build up their talent base
as quickly as possible, as
their season starts with major
competition. They first play
Cascade and then Banks.
Both teams finished at the
top of their leagues last year.
“Both are really well
coached and are top teams
from last year,” Wiesner said.
“It’s right into the fire.”

“The good part
is we rotated so
deep on the bench
the last couple
years that I think
we’ll be better than
last year,”
Halverson said.
“We don’t have
massive numbers,
only 11 kids, but I
feel confident put-
ting any one of
them on the varsity
floor.
“We’ve got
some good, mature
kids,” Halverson
said. “Only three seniors,
but we’re pretty well off
… Time will tell. There
are little bugs to work out,
but by the time we hit
league games we should
be in a good form.”
The Cougars’ prepared
this summer as well. “We
played 43 games,”
Halverson said. “They got
an opportunity to get a lot
of games under their belts
and minutes on the court.”
Overall, the girls are
excited to start the season.
“Basketball is my
favorite,” Audrey Barden
said. Barden, along with
several of the other girls,
played volleyball in the
fall. “[My lungs] are a lit-
tle out of shape,” Barden
said, as volleyball doesn’t
require as much sprinting
as basketball.
Halverson isn’t relying
on any single player to
carry the rest of the team.
The Cougars are “talented
top to bottom,” he said. At
every position, he has a
player who knows their
fundamentals, is athletic
and plays well as a team.
“We will be dangerous any
given night,” he said.
