What’s on your
paign, I want to get the survey going again, and
even have a town hall meeting. I would like to
ensure that the representation within commit-
tees and commissions covers a wide range of
outlooks.
You’ve mentioned before that you are a
former Marine. How will this training help
lead the city?
I am a former Marine, but I am not sure how
that will help me lead the city unless we are in
combat with our neighbors. There are probably
some leadership benefits, but our training was
not as much in collaborative leadership, which is
more what is needed in the
position of mayor.
Do you have any favor-
ite local hangouts?
In Lake Oswego I like the
Blue Moon Café, Peet’s
Coffee, Chuck’s, The Olive
and Grape, Oswego Grill,
Zupan’s’ patio on Thursday
evenings in the summer
(and) River West church.
What do you enjoy in
your spare time?
In my spare time I enjoy
reading, playing golf —
when I can — working
outside in my yard and watching college football
games with friends.
I understand you are a big book collector.
If you were to write a book, what would it
be about?
If I were to write a book, it would be a mystery,
probably with some legal issues as the underly-
ing component.
Tell me about your family.
My wife, Kim, and I have been married for 43
years and we enjoy each other more than ever.
She has been extremely supportive. I have two
daughters, one of whom lives in Australia, and
the other in Texas. Each has two children and
their ages range from 3 to 7. My wife and I have a
Great Dane named Tango who was very helpful
on the campaign trail.
What brought you into politics?
I entered politics because I felt we needed to
have some changes in the direction the city was
going. I have enjoyed meeting all of the people
I have met in my campaign and endeavoring to
see if we can accommodate a number of views
while moving forward.
Who is your hero and why?
My father would be one of my heroes. He pro-
vided a stable home for us, his kids, despite the
death of his first wife when my sisters and I were
teenagers and my younger brother was a tod-
dler. He had numerous challenges in his life but
still succeeded and did it with a sense of humor
and a loving attitude.
If you were describing Lake Oswego to
someone out of town, how would you
describe it?
I would describe Lake Oswego as a beauti-
ful place to live with a well-educated, relatively
affluent citizenry of involved people who want the
best for the city.
If you were a cartoon, who would you be?
If I were a cartoon, I would probably be Bizarro.
If you were to have dinner with five fa-
mous people, living or dead, who would
they be?
Jesus Christ, Abraham Lincoln, Stephen
Hawking, William Shakespeare, Margaret
Thatcher.
Impressive. Also impressive is a quote
you live by — “failure is not an option.”
Does this slogan work for the city of
Lake Oswego as well?
I think the “failure is not an option” quote works
for this city because we have all the ingredients
to be a wonderful city and to grow and prosper
in that manner. There will probably be some
rough times, but I certainly will not give up during
my term of office.
Grandpa Kent has four
grandchildren – two
living in Texas and two
living in Australia.

Just finished:
“Hangar Flying” by General Merrill A.
McPeak
This book is an example of what I love about
Lake Oswego – getting to know your neighbors.
I’ve met Tony McPeak, visited on several occasions and
even shared a few meals. I know that he has had a long and
distinguished Air Force career culminating in Chief of Staff,
US Air Force, but have never learned much of the details - until
now. Tony has said this book about his early years as a fighter
squadron pilot during the 60s is targeted toward pilots. Even so,
as a non-pilot, I found his detailed narrative, insights and stories
fascinating. A wonderful window into the Air Force flying!

“The Storms of Denali” by Nicholas O’Connell
Who are they and why do they do it? Are climbers an insular
group of danger-seekers or is there a little bit of climber in all
of us? The story follows four climbers in pursuit of a new route
on dangerous, avalanche-prone Denali. Rich, vivid descriptions
put you in their group. Heroism seems to shift ultimately to the
person who can get the group off the peak. A great read!
Next up:
“Cloud Atlas” by David Mitchell
I really enjoyed director Tom Tyker’s movie version of this
book. I’m looking forward to comparing the book with the
movie.

“Rise to Greatness – Abraham Lincoln and
America’s Most Perilous Year” by David Von
Drehle
I’ve always had a passion for American History and en-
joy learning about our country’s defining moments. Abraham
Lincoln was an interesting and highly influential character in
defining the American experience, and what it means to live here
today. The book focuses around the events surrounding our 16th
president in 1862, as the Civil War raged. The only way to know
where we’re going is to understand where we’ve been.

“My Mother She Killed Me, My Father He
Ate Me : Forty New Fairy Tales” edited by
Kate Bernheimer
These fairy tales are not for children! Oates, Updike,
Gaiman — 40 capable authors each with a unique take on fairy
tales. Jumping around this anthology has been a real adventure.
And speaking of fairy tales, I also just read Mo Willems new
picture book, “Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs.” I am so
impressed when a master story-teller takes something so familiar
and makes it surprising. And this one is for kids!

“Gone Girl” by Gillian Flynn
I wanted to read this book for its novel ap-
proach – the missing wife story is recounted
from both the husband’s and the wife’s perspective. The
author employs clever prose and engaging suspense as the
emotional response to the characters evolves with every chapter.
Definitely worth reading!
