AUGUST 2013

LO’s dog days of summer
A
s we ease into August, it
feels like life’s odometer
either spins out of con-
trol…or slows to barely a
crawl. We’re racing out the door to
a neighborhood concert or our next
summer weekend getaway, or we’re
lounging in the backyard sipping a
mojito, enjoying the sun’s warm rays
and reading the page-turner we’ve
had on our nightstand for months.
(Check out this month’s What’s on
Your Nightstand column on page
11 if you’re looking for book sugges-
tions.) August is an all or nothing
month. And the food…the glorious,
fresh food! We’re all IN where the summer bounty
is concerned! What did we ever do before Farmers’
Markets?
Speaking of odometers, there will be about 300
of them in Lake Oswego this month at the Collector
Car and Classic Boat Show on August 18. What a
great way to spend a Sunday…meandering through
the park or on a dock enjoying these beautiful vehi-
cles that have been lovingly restored. The big buzz at
our house is the model trains that will be there this
year. Railfans of all ages won’t want to miss that!
Jillian Daley interviews three local collectors about
their passion for classic cars and boats on page 4.
Surely you’ll work up a thirst at the car show, so
head over to Tucci for some of the coolest cocktails
in town — or try making them at home.
Barb Randall gets some tips from Tucci
bartender Nic Donahue on page 8. (On
second thought, who wants to mix at
home? We say leave it to the experts!)
Sherry Dorn has found some mod
summer outfits that will keep you look-
ing cool and fashion forward on these
hot days. We’re dying for the maxi
dress from EG Page and sassy sandals
from Soletta…and the striped skirt
from Grapevine. Yikes — we just spent
our paychecks and all we’ve done is
oooh and ahhh over the photos!
You can’t have an August issue with-
out a reference to “dog days of sum-
mer,” so new dog mama Nicole DeCosta hit the
dog parks to meet some new playmates and their
owners. She also hit up some pet boutiques to find
the latest must-haves for Fido. (Her dog’s name
isn’t Fido, but some dog’s name must be.)
Finally, if your August isn’t already booked,
you’ll want to check out the events calendar on
page 12. The summer fun just keeps going on
through the month and we know you won’t want
to miss a thing! After all, whether you’re an “all”
or “nothing” August person, you can’t ever say
this city doesn’t offer you a variety of things to do.
That’s what we love about Lake Oswego!

The Review
After more than a decade in the
doldrums, redevelopment of Lake
Oswego’s Block 137, owned by Gene
Wizer, appears to finally be moving
ahead.
Developers and city staff presented a
plan to the Lake Oswego Redevelop-
ment Agency on Tuesday that would
transform the whole downtown block
into a development with 242 “upper-
end” apartments, retail spaces on the
street level and underground parking
along with a courtyard and a public
walkway. The block, between First and
Second streets, Evergreen Road and A
Avenue, has long been eyed for such a
project, but redevelopment has taken
place around the property rather than
on it over the years.
The Wizer block is now sandwiched
betweenMillenniumPlaza Park, a com-
mercial building housing the Italian
restaurant Tucci and other businesses,
and a fewdozen three-level townhomes.
“This is a project that’s been a high
priority for the LORA board and the re-
development agency for years,” said
Brant Williams, the city’s director of
economic development, on Tuesday at
city hall. The LORA board ismade up of
city council members.
Patrick Kessi of W&K Development
said Monday that his firm had reached
an agreement withGeneWizer late last
year, although discussions between the
parties began as long as six or seven
years ago. Now, if all goes according to
plan, W&K will buy the property in the
heart of downtown where Wizer’s gro-
cery store has served residents for
more than 50 years.
City meeting records confirm Wizer
has been in contact with numerous de-
velopers over the past decade, but a re-
development project never came to
fruition on his block.
“Gene is very cautious,” Kessi said,
“and a really good man. He cares about
the community tremendously. He didn’t
want to just let a developer have all of
the control.”
