T
he New Wave British In-
vasion hit Oregon shores
like a tsunami in 1980.
Eight young blokes fromOregon
called The Crazy 8s, dubbed by
Rolling Stone as “one of the top
10 college radio bands,” made
a splash on “Star Search” (the
“American Idol” of the ’80s) play-
ing "Johnny Q Public" and win-
ning four stars.
This hit landed them at colleg-
es all around the U.S and Canada,
opening for The Clash, Roman-
tics, English Beat and Violent
Fems. This summer, The Crazy
8s will celebrate their first digital
release of their third album, “Out
of theWay.”
These Oregon Music Hall of
Fame honorees are just one of the
exciting bands that will perform
at this year’s Festival.
Prefer a jazz beat to ’80s pop?
Enjoy the sounds of Mel Brown,
who was part of the Motown sta-
ble in the 1960s, playing in rhythm
sections for The Supremes, The
Temptations and Marvin Gaye,
and has fronted his own bands in
Portland for more than 40 years.
By developing Jimmy Mak’s
jazz club, Mel Brown and Thara
Memory provided a springboard
for famous young stars like Kate
