T
he connection between artists is a time-
honored tradition. Before there were
schools and academies of art, artists
learned their trades as apprentices in a master’s
workshop. When an apprentice was ready to
leave the workshop, he or she produced a final
artwork to signify advancement to the status of
Master, thus creating a Masterpiece.
In honor of the Festival’s 50th anniversary and
on behalf of the City of Lake Oswego, the Arts
Council of Lake Oswego presents a new exhibi-
tion of artists’ work,
A Chronicle of Influence:
Then &Now
. Looking backward and forward, this
exhibition highlights the influential relationships
between 24 pairs of
artists.
This exhibition
hopes to reflect
and explore the
working relation-
ships of artists and
how they influ-
ence one another
through
study,
copy, examination,
competition, and
critique.
Start-
ing with the best
of the best, past
Chronicle winners
were invited to ex-
hibit in this year’s
show. Each artist
was then asked to
invite another artist who has been influential as
a mentor, colleague or protégé. The artworks will
be exhibited side by side to generate a dialogue
about influence.
