Portland Rescue Mission
Development Team Assistant
In the past ten years, our econ-
omy has struggled and families
have been torn apart through
job-loss, addiction and homeless-
ness. Portland Rescue Mission is a
place where hurtingmen, women
and children can find help. Now
we are looking for area business-
es that have a heart to give these
men and women the second
chance they need.
It has become the stereotype
that if you give a homeless person
money, they will use it to buy al-
cohol or drugs, and that it’s easier
for them to ask for a handout than
to find a job.
Today the
s te reot ype
has stretched
to include
whole fami-
lies. Parents
have l os t
the i r jobs
and cannot
provide for
the bas i c
needs of their children, which
causes issues within the family,
and within each person. It is only
when they reach the very bottom
that they seek help.
Portland Rescue Mission’s de-
sire is to reach out a helping hand
to those men, women and chil-
dren. We are more than a soup
kitchen and shelter. The outreach
ministry at
B u r n s i d e
Shelter is
just a small
part of what
we do. Men
and women
can find a
hot meal
and clean
clothes at
the shelter, but they also have
the chance to enter the New Life
Program we offer. Located in
northeast Portland at The Harbor
for men and Shepherd’s Door for
women and children, The New
Life Program is a 12-month resi-
dential recovery program focused
on helpingmen and women over-
come addictions, inspire spiritual
growth, and develop life skills.
After graduating from the New
Life Program, residents can enter
a second-year program called
“Service.” The Service Program’s
primary focus is vocational train-
ing, allowing the resident to ap-
ply what they have learned in an
employment setting. Each Service
resident has at least a year of so-
ber and clean living. They meet
with career and life coaches and
have built a support network
through 12-step programs and
churches in the community. In
our learning centers, residents
are taught computer basics with
an emphasis on Microsoft Office,
they work with volunteer tutors to
strengthen their academic skills,
and some even attain their GED.
Classes, such as StrengthsFinder,
are provided to discover each in-
dividual’s top strengths and how
to use them in the workplace.
They learn to build relationships
with others and to work as a team.
Portland Rescue Mission would
like to expand the opportunities
we present to our Service resi-
dents to include businesses in
Portland. Along with the Home
Builders Foundation, we ask that
you consider allowing our Ser-
vice residents work opportuni-
ties as they continue their recov-
ery and build their life skills and
can attain their GED. For more
details or if you have any ques-
tions, please contact Tom Lister
at (503) 746-9733 or email

Not a charity, but a chance… vocation training
Volunteers from several Bank of
America branches came together
to brave the heat on June 29th to
stain a fence around the property
recently renovated by the Home
Builders Foundation. Builder cap-
tain Roger Neu of Nupark Devel-
opment LLC and many members
of the HBA completed the re-
model in February of this year.
“The painting of the fence
brings us a big step closer to
completing the exterior work,”
says Camille Taylor-Sullivan,
Facilities Manager at Boys &
Girls Aid. “This and other im-
portant contributions by the
Home Builders Foundation are
visible in so many aspects of the 4-plex. It is that care
and thought that creates a welcoming and comfortable
surrounding for our clients.”
Thank you to the Bank of America volunteers for
generously donating their time to get the project one
step closer to completion!

Bank of America volunteers Michelle Gibson and
Rachel Akerson are happy to spend a few hours of
their weekend serving their community.
The Home Builders Foundation thanks the following
companies for their involvement in the renovation of Port-
land Rescue Mission’s “The Harbor” (formerly known as
Next Step). We couldn’t do what we do in the community
without the support of our friends in the home building in-
dustry. If your company would like to be involved in a future
HBF project, please contact Brenda Ketah at (503) 684-1880
or
