Earthquakes: brace yourself and
home
Oregon is at a high-risk of a
9.0 magnitude earthquake that
could strike as soon as today,
according to a report by the
Oregon Seismic Safety Policy
Advisory Commission. The
earthquake is expected to im-
pact more than 37,000 people
and cause $32 billion in damag-
es, so preparing your home
and family for potential flood-
ing, collapse and fire is highly
encouraged by the Oregon Of-
fice of Emergency Manage-
ment.
“It is an imminent threat,”
Landavazo said. “We have the
exact same geological forces as
they did off the coast of Japan.
There is no way you can believe
it won’t happen.”
Landavazo assures that
earthquakes are survivable, but
it’s important to be prepared for
the aftermath.
Safety measures include
making sure your home is an-
chored to its foundation, keep-
ing flashlights near beds, brac-
ing overhead light fixtures, bolt-
ing water heaters and gas appli-
ances to wall studs, installing
strong latches on cabinets, and
hanging heavy pictures or mir-
rors away from beds. You also
should know how to shut off
your gas valves and learn about
your area’s seismic building
standards and land codes be-
fore beginning new construc-
tion.
Owners of brick homes
should be prepared for falling
bricks.
“Everybody should know
what to do when the earthquake
strikes: duck, cover and hold,”
Landavazo said. “Most injuries
occur because something falls
on you.”
According to the Oregon Of-
fice of Emergency Management,
experts advise taking cover un-
der stable furniture rather than
hiding under a doorway as typi-
cally recommended.
Like power outages, families
should also have an established
meeting point, along with a
phone number at least 100 miles
away to contact.
The residents of East Mult-
nomah County also can join the
“neighborhood ready” program
to share information and tips
with neighbors regarding natu-
ral disasters.
“One of the best things I think
we can do to be prepared is
come together as neighbor-
hoods,” Landavazo said.

Preparing for family pets in a disaster is important, too. Make sure your pet is wearing a securely fastened collar with current ID information.
