“Take your kids small stu ed ani-
mals and put them on a tree,” she ex-
plains. “ ey’ll look so much better than
in the toy box and can generate so many
memories. You can also put sprigs with
pinecones and berries in the branches for
more color.”
While putting up the tree and may-
be, adding a centerpiece or two to tables
might constitute the extent of some holi-
day decorating, consider simple touches
that add a festive are to places not nor-
mally on the radar for festooning. A quick
way to add whimsy to light xtures, chan-
deliers and lamps, Greenslade said, is to
hang ornaments on ribbons.
“Ornaments are so pretty and people
already have them,” she said. “Most people
have beautiful collections of ornaments,
but they run out of tree. Hang them else-
where. Or put them in glass bowls on
tables. Place a couple snow-frosted sprigs
on the table and you’ve got another focal
point.”
e last few years have found many
folks giving up live trees in favor of arti-
cial ones, thanks to the improvements in
the materials used in manufacturing. But
the one thing missing, Greenslade says, is
that rich pine scent that accompanies a
live r tree.
Consider hanging pomanders lled
with holiday-scented potpourri in the
branches.
ey not only embellish the
tree, but recreate that nostalgic scent so
unique to Christmas.
“People can also have that pine smell
by using candles if they have an arti cial
tree,” Greenslade recommends. “Christ-
mas, in my opinion, is all about get-
ting your senses involved — potpourri,
candles, soaps.
at’s what really de nes
Christmas.”
Decorating for Christmas doesn’t have
to be an ordeal. It will always be a mystery,
however, why it takes days to put every-
thing up and only hours to take it down.
But by keeping things simple, and em-
ploying a little creativity, you can welcome
the holidays home for the season in a style
that is truly your own.
