F
or the new board chair-elect of
the Beaverton Area Chamber of
Commerce, community involvement
is a family business of sorts.
After all, Jerry Jones Jr. grewup observing
his mother’s “hand reflex.”
“If we were at parent-teacher night, she
would raise her hand before they’d finish
saying, ‘Hey, can anyone help?’” explains
Jones, incoming chairman of the chamber’s
board of directors. “She loved helping out
because she knew she was doing something
that impacted her kids as well.”
As a 30-year resident of Beaverton, Jones
sees how taking part in the local business
and recreation community benefits his nearly
4-year-old son, J.J., and nearly 2-year-old
daughter, Ruby.
As someone who learned to swim at
Tualatin Hills Parks and Recreation District
facilities, Jones says watching his children
have their own “firsts” spurred him to run
— successfully — for a seat on the THPRD
board.
“It’s just bringing a fresh perspective to
an already very involved and very cohesive
board,” he says, adding that he contributes
“the perspective of a small, young family
that is using the park district facilities and
programs today. That perspective really
resonated with the voters.”
Something else that likelywonhimsupport
was his professional resume: Jones serves
as vice president and general manager at
Lanphere Construction and Development,
which manages properties and facilities for
the largeLanphere familyof autodealerships.
In his six years at the company, Jones has
seen it grow beyond serving Lanphere
Enterprises, expanding to a full-service
general contracting and construction firm.
“I have a work history in capital
improvements and facilities maintenance,”
Jones says. “The parks district has a $100
million bond program right now.”
He also has a history of working for
an employer whose philosophy about
community mirrors his own.
Lanphere, he says, is “a community-based
company that’s been in Beaverton for over 50
years, and they’ve always been involved in
Beaverton. I really hope I never have to work
for anyone else.”
Jones says he is eager to help guide the
THPRDboard as it tackles large construction
projects, and he wants to oversee responsible
use of taxpayer dollars to improve what he
views as the finest park district in the Pacific
Northwest.
But he feels especially poised for the
position due to his youth playing T-ball in
THPRD parks.
“I had a great childhood,” he adds.
