Experiences like this have inspired Ecker
to focus equally on Beaverton’s present
and past. To that end, she volunteers with
Catalyst Partnerships, a largely faith-
based organization
that
funds
and
coordinates
a
different kind of
preservation.
“About 130 of our
volunteers
come
to
renovate
our
Safe Haven Home
in Beaverton, for
abused and struggling women,” Ecker says.
“It’s been open about a year and a half.
Home Depot sent 27 volunteers, and they
painted the inside in one day.”
Other volunteers pitched in to fix the
house up over the course of sevenweekends.
Recently, Ecker adds, a fundraiser golf
tournament raised more than $40,000 to
enable Catalyst to make upgrades to the
homes of elderly, disabled and economically
challenged families.”
Ecker also serves on the Beaverton
Downtown Association, which is currently
focused on renovating the historic
downtown to make it a desirable, walkable
destination for locals and visitor alike.
One way, Ecker says, could be to widen
the sidewalks. Broadway already serves
as a kind of “festival street,” Ecker says,
pointing out that it is hosting its second
year of art walk activities as part of the
First Friday program.
“I really want to promote volunteering
in Beaverton,” Ecker explains. “The
organizations that I volunteer with are so
much fun, and really enjoyable.”
