DOWNTOWN BEAVERTON
11
S
omehow,
a
relaxing
Sunday
morning is not complete without a
trip up (or down) Canyon Road to
Tom’s Pancake House for a stack
of pancakes and a hot cup of coffee. It’s a
tradition Beaverton families have enjoyed
for decades.
Greg White, who owns the restaurant
with his brother, Paul, describes Tom’s
as, “wonderful recipes, comprised of
top-quality ingredients, served by the
friendliest staff in town.” They should know
how to do it right. Tom’s has been serving
customers for nearly half a century.
A busy time at Tom’s is Sunday morning.
Generations have enjoyed pancakes,
waffles, omelettes, orange juice and coffee.
“Pancakes are all made from scratch,”
White said, pointing out that other popular
menu items include the Santa Fe Omelette,
which contains sauteed chicken breast,
sweet onion, bell pepper, tomato and pepper
jack cheese. Santa Fe sauce gives it the
perfect zing.
The pancake menu is extensive,
featuring banana nut, chocolate chip,
Hazelnut, potato and blueberry pancakes.
Crepes and waffles
are also featured in
an up-dated menu
that just came out.
It’s
not
just
breakfast that draws
customers from all
over the community.
Tom’s serves the
lunch and dinner
crowd with a great assortment of comfort
food and traditional favorites. Sandwiches,
burgers and soups (prepared from scratch)
are popular lunch items, White said. The
bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich has
toasted light-wheat bread and three slices
of bacon. The house club sandwich will fill
you up with turkey, bacon and tomato. The
Reuben sandwich, with lean corned beef,
melted swiss cheese and sauerkraut, is
simply comfort food at its finest.
Comfort food doesn’t end at lunch. The
dinnermenuhas favorites that youprobably
remembered as a kid. Beef stroganoff has
lean sirloin tips, mushrooms and onions
over fettuccini noodles. Tom’s pot roast
dinner features scratch-made mashed
potatoes and fresh sauteed vegetables.
For salad lovers, the grilled chicken
cobb salad is a great choice, offering grilled
chicken breast, bacon, avocado, hard-boiled
egg and blue cheese. The grilled chicken
Caesar features grilled chicken breast
served over tasty romaine greens. Top it off
with garlic toast.
Finish your meal with a delicious pie.
Tom’s offers pies from the Beaverton
Bakery and pies baked in-house, White
said.
The dessert menu will make you feel
like you’re in an old-fashioned soda shop.
Milk shakes come in chocolate, vanilla,
strawberry, raspberry, blueberry and
marionberry flavors. Ice cream sundaes,
banana splits and root beer floats are
offered. Homemade cinnamon rolls and
scratch-made pecan caramel rolls are a hit
with customers of all ages.
Since he’s owned the business for nearly
20 years, White gets to know his customers.
“Linda and Jim come in every day for lunch,
then again for dinner,” White said. “Steve
and family don’t have their own table, but
they do have their own server — It’s like a
‘Cheers’ (the TV series) mentality — People
are going to remember having been to
Tom’s.”
White is not an owner who is content to
just sit in the office and pore over a stack
of paperwork. “The first thing I do (when
he arrives at Tom’s) is greet the staff. I
see who’s on break,” White said. “I take
the measure of the needs of the day — I go
around, I serve coffee, I greet the guests, go
in the office, push a pencil for a while, come
back out, hang with the guests some more.”
Yes, White will even run the cash
register, if needed.
Tom’s Pancake House is such a fixture
in Beaverton that, White said, folks use the
iconic sign to give driving directions. “We
really are a landmark. I’m very thankful.”
