Men get MVP treatment at Sport Clips
I
t’s good to be a guy.
So says the slogan for Sport Clips, a
sports-themed men’s hair-snipping estab-
lishment that “Entrepreneur” magazine
last year named as one of the top 20 fastest
growing franchises.
Sport Clips has expanded to about 1,200 lo-
cations nationwide within the past two decades.
Lake Oswego resident Bruce Milliken owns
Sport Clips sites in Lake Oswego, Clackamas
and West Linn. Milliken, a long-time business-
man and father to six kids — opened the West
Linn Sport Clips in June 2010. Milliken said
the company’s founder, Gordon Logan, saw a
need for an updated barbershop as the tradi-
tional home to the fade and the high-and-tight
faded away.
“There was a good need for men who want-
ed an updated barbershop experience,” Mil-
liken said.
His local business, at 21900 Willamette
Drive, suite 207, features five televisions, in-
cluding one in the waiting room. The TVs are
tuned to live sports and competitions such as
football, baseball, basketball, soccer and NAS-
CAR.
Men can choose the $17 basic varsity cut or
the $23 MVP treatment, which includes a hot
towel, cut, a scalp massage, a second hot towel
and a conditioning scalp treatment.
Though Sport Clips has a lot to offer, Mil-
liken said there’s one thing he doesn’t abide.
Milliken said it’s a family place, and alcohol
isn’t on hand because it changes the atmo-
sphere, and that’s important when many of the
men bring their children. Boys younger than 10
often come in for a $14 haircut. Lollipops are
usually on hand for kids.
“I think people can make it through a haircut
without a beer,” Milliken said.
His customers seem to love his salons, flock-
ing to them in droves. His West Linn site serves
1,800 to 1,900 customers per month, and it has
10 to 12 employees, some of whom are part
time. He can boast 34 employees and 5,500
customers per month total at his three salons.
One attraction is the fact that Sport Clips has
a reputation for community service. On a corpo-
rate level, the company offers aid such as phone
cards for service people overseas through the
Veterans of Foreign Wars’ Operation Uplink.
Milliken’s businesses support schools, ath-
letic organizations and groups such as Young
Life.
“We try to stay involved with different orga-
nizations,” Milliken said.
