AROUND THE REGION
Looking to head a little further this
summer? The area has a ton of great
options. Here are a few:
ROSE FESTIVAL
— This is the grand-
daddy of the local summer festivals.
Stretching from May 19 to June 16,
Portland’s three-week salute to the
rose contains a number of major at-
tractions. These, of course, include the
Starlight Parade (June 1), the queen’s
coronation (June 8), the Grand Floral
Parade (June 8), a visit from several
U.S. and Canadian ships (TBD), the
Fun Center on the waterfront, the
Portland Rose Society Spring Rose
Show (June 6-7), dragon boat races
(June 8-9) and much, much more. Visit
rosefestival.org.
REMEMBER OUR VETERANS
— A
number of local memorials have been
established in hopes that we who enjoy
this country’s many freedoms will not
forget those who made the ultimate
sacrifice for those freedoms. Visit the
Vietnam Veterans of Oregon Memorial,
4000 S.W. Canyon Road, the Oregon
Korean War Memorial, at 29600 S.W.
Park Place, Town Center Park, in Wilson-
ville and the Beaverton Veterans Memo-
rial in Memorial Park on Southwest
Watson Avenue.
OAKS AMUSEMENT PARK
— Tucked
away in Southeast Portland near the
Sellwood Bridge is one of the oldest
continuously operating amusement
parks in the United States. It includes
about two-dozen rides, a skating rink,
a new mini golf course and picnic
grounds. Visit oakspark.com.
GET YOUR STEAM UP
— They call it
Antique Powerland, and it’s located in
Brooks, about 8 miles north of Sa-
lem on I-5. What it is, according to its
website (antiquepowerland.com), is a
nonprofit organization “dedicated to the
preservation, restoration and demon-
stration of steam powered equipment,
antique farm machinery and imple-
ments. For more information call 503-
393-2424.
GO TO THE ENCHANTED FOREST
—The
Enchanted Forest, opened in 1971 by
Roger Tofte, has never stopped growing
and improving. To learn more about the
history of this unique Oregon attraction,
as well as information on hours, rates
and features, visit enchantedforest.com.
ROLL WITH IT
– If you like your competi-
tive sporting events with an extra dose
of attitude, brutality and style, check
out the Rose City Rollers. Derby Daze,
Aug. 23-25, is a weekend filled with
scrimmages, a barbeque and an after
party. Visit rosecityrollers.com.
TAKE A WALKING TOUR
—Choose from
several award-winning, leisurely Port-
land urban adventures with no hills and
see what the hype is all about. So many
choices...join a few! Visit portland walk-
ing tours.com.
HILLSBORO AIR SHOW
—From July
26-28, the Oregon International Air
Show will celebrate its 26th year family
friendly entertainment both in the air
and on the ground. Visit oregonairshow.
com.
GO TO THE ZOO
—The Oregon Zoo has
been a world-class operation for many
years, dating back to the days when it
was known as the top elephant breed-
ing facility. Check out the new baby
elephant and otter, as well as daily bird
shows, summer concerts series and
zoo camps! Call 503-226-1561 or visit
oregonzoo.org!
CREATE A “FISHING” STORY
—Fishing
is easy, fun and quick at Rainbow Trout
Farm! Watch the excitement on your
kids’ faces when they land their first
fish. Rekindle your own memories when
you feel that plump, juicy Rainbow
tugging on your hook! Make it a mini-
holiday up Hwy 26 toward Mt. Hood
while fishing at Rainbow Trout Farm’s
30 acres of trees, meadows, 2,000
rhododendrons and ten beautifully
landscaped fishing holes brimming with
Rainbow Trout! Visit rainbowtroutfarm.
