HSequoia Veterinary Clinic

appy June, everyone! Our clinic cat Mango loves Spring with its warm weather,
bugs to chase, and brightly colored flowers. Spring is not fun for some of our

pets. We can summarize the reason in one word: ALLERGIES. For pets, allergies
most often manifest with skin problems, versus sneezing or runny eyes (although
sometimes we see these symptoms also). We see three main types of allergies in

our cat and dog friends:
1. Flea allergies: Most common allergy in our area. It often causes itching and/or

scabbing on the lower back, just above the tail, and on the rear legs. You may not
see the fleas! Just one flea bite every 7-10 days is enough in the allergic pet to keep

them miserable. The remedy is simple: flea control. There are many products de-
signed to do this. Often treatment of the pet AND the environment is needed. Let us

help you find the right fit product for your pet.
2. and 3. Airborne and Food allergies: Oregon is rich with plant life. All our plants

flower and pollenate. We also, given our damp cooler months, have mold and mildew
growth in the soil. Pollens, mold spores, animal dander, and other airborne allergens
can lead to itchiness in prone pets. Affected pets tend to get itchy faces, feet, and

folds (think groin, armpits, under the tail, and in the ears). Our food allergic pets usu-
ally have the exact same symptoms, but are eating instead of breathing their aller-

gens. Secondary skin infections are common if the itching is severe or chronic.
Allergies are the most frustrating conditions we help our pet owners manage. Aller-

gies cannot be cured, but testing often can help pinpoint which allergens are prob- CC
lematic. With or without testing, allergies can be managed a variety of ways: 714.

antihistamines, bathing, steroids, foods, allergy injections and, when appropriate, an- 5341
tibiotics or antifungal treatments to help with the secondary infections. Time and pa- 45
tience are mandatory!

Pet allergies are frustrating, to be sure. The doctors and staff at Sequoia are ready
and waiting to help manage the itch. Call (503) 266-6090 to schedule your allergy

consultation today
