With its oak-shaded campus adjoining historic
downtown, Pacific University is a destination in
its own right.
Originally founded as an orphanage by Congregational
missionaries, Pacific University has evolved into an
acclaimed institute of higher learning. The oldest chartered
university in the west is now home to 3,200 undergraduate
and graduate students enrolled in comprehensive liberal
arts, education, optometry and health professions
curricula.
It boasts world-class music through its
Performing Arts Series,
monthly exhibits at
the Kathrin Cawein Gallery of Art and a university
museum inside Old College Hall, which was built in
1850 to house the original Tualatin Academy.
The annual Lu’au,
which marked 50 years in
2010, is presented by the Pacific University student
Hawaiian Club. The largest Lu’au in the mainland
United States, the Lu’au offers Polynesian music,
dance and entertainment as well as authentic Lu’au
food – drawing visitors from across the country.
Holding its own in the world of collegiate
sports,
this Division III school suits up players
for traditional sports such as football, soccer,
basketball, baseball and softball, as
well as lacrosse, swimming, tennis,
golf, women’s wrestling and more.
