Agri-tourism
Forest Grove’s deep agricultural roots are
evident in a variety of ways.
Many of the area’s
farms welcome U-Pickers, from the early berry season
to the late fall apple harvest. L-Bar-T Bison Ranch
offers fresh cuts of lean, healthy bison meat and jerky.
Manicured stands of hazelnuts can still be
seen on the edge of town
alongside vibrant
nurseries and verdant fields of grass seed, hay,
clover and row crops.
In recent years a growing farm-to-
market trend has taken off,
as evidenced
by the Forest Grove Farmers Market, open from
May through October, featuring locally-grown
produce and handmade goods. Vegetable and
fruit stands, meanwhile, dot the local byways.
Community-supported agriculture
programs,
or CSAs, are also popular, with
health-minded folks “subscribing” to a weekly or
monthly share of fresh fruits and vegetables just as they
might subscribe to a favorite magazine or newspaper.
The wealth of vineyards in the area and the
fact that Forest Grove is the birthplace of
Oregon’s Pinot Noir is impressive in its own
right.
Combine that with the Vineyard and Valley Scenic
Tour Route, and you have an afternoon that can’t be beat.
The 50-mile excursion through some of the Tualatin Valley’s
most verdant landscapes showcases the
region’s agricultural abundance, rich
history and natural splendor, capped
by print-worthy views of the iconic
Mt. Hood.
