STAND UP PADDLING
— Any body of water can be the perfect place for the
workout that feels like surfing on flat, even water. It’s called stand up paddling
and even a novice can jump on board this fast-growing sport. The Willamette
River has several access points, including at Willamette Park in West Linn,
George Rogers Park in Lake Oswego and Sellwood Park in Southeast. With a
calm, no-wake zone on the east side of the island and the chance to spot wild-
life, another popular route is to circle Ross Island. That’s the route paddlers
will take on June 9 at the Rose City SUP classic. In addition to seeing the sport
in action, there also will be free demos on the beach. For more information on the race, vis-
it rosecitysup.com. To rent equipment or take a lesson to learn the proper stance and
stroke, check out Gorge Performance’s Portland store at 7400 S.W. Macadam Ave. For more
information, call 503-246-6646 or visit gorgeperformance.com.
