WASHINGTON COUNTY ARTS GUIDE MARCH – MAY 2013
S
omehow, in the midst of
tight budgets and a still-
recovering economy, art
continues to thrive in
Washington County. And thank
goodness, because art is how
we relax, what we turn to after
work, how we process and
reflect on the twists and turns
in our lives.
Art is how we and our children
exercise our imaginations and become
sensitive to other living things. Whether
it’s a book, a play, a movie, a sculpture
or music, art gets us wondering — in a
world that needs all the wonder it can
get. As this Spring Arts Guide shows,
many of our elected officials seem to
understand this because they’re doing
their part to keep art alive in our
communities. If that art, in turn, draws
visitors and their “tourist dollars,” it
can repay the favor financially. But
there’s plenty of free art as well — and
plenty of ways to be “repaid” that don’t
involve money. So pore through this
guide, circle the events you don’t want
to miss, then go forth and Read. Watch.
Listen. Wonder.

include events for
June through August
2013, will be

show encores in Tigard.
7 Listen my children and
you shall hear—storytelling
from far and near.
8 Astronaut training
camp? Yarn tasting?
Grant-writing help?
Virtuoso harmonica? New
Orleans jazz? It’s all
there—and much more!—
in our event-packed
calendar.
11 Sure as crocuses,
high school musicals
sprout each spring. Look
for your favorites on this
list.
12 Go ahead—stop and
stare. With public art,
that’s the point.
15 “Suite Surrender” has
fun with a sour encounter
in Beaverton.
16 A black-and-white
Falstaff plays for
centuries-old laughs in
Hillsboro.
