Beaverton Eye Health – Protecting the health of your eyes

W
hen you enter Beaverton
Eye Health at Progress
Ridge TownSquare in Bea-
verton, you immediately
run into the Optique Shop, an impressive
collection of eyeglasses and sunglasses.
It’s a good thing, becausewe are days away
from the start of summer, and you’ll need
to protect your skin and your eyes.
At Beaverton Eye Health, set up an ap-
pointment with Romanian-born Dr. Adina
Zapodeanu, who is a graduate of Pacific
University College of Optometry.
Zapodeanu knows that even the limited
sunshine we receive in our corner of the
Pacific Northwest can cause big problems.
“We know that ultra violet light is dam-
aging – for the skin especially,” Zapodeanu
said, pointing out that skin cancer can
show up on the eye lids and around the
eyes. Cancer has also been known to strike
the eye itself.
This is the time of year to invest in a nice
pair of sunglasses, not just to look cool on
the Oregon Coast, but to protect your eyes
from damaging sun rays.
“It’s very important,” Zapodeanu said.
“We need to protect the eye area from the
damaging ultra violet light.”
It’s important, Zapodeanu said, to have
sunglasses that are polarized and offer
protection against UVA and UVB (ultra-
violet radiation). Also, the glass frames
should cover bony areas surrounding the
eyes, because sunlight can enter the eye
area frommany angles.
And don’t think you only get sun burns
on your legs, back and chest. The eye lids
can burn, causing redness. You can even
suffer a burn (inflammation) on the cor-
nea. These kinds of burns can also happen
in the winter, especially on the ski slopes.
“They notice pain in the eye, irritation,
tears, sensitivity to light. These would
be the symptoms,” Zapodeanu said, not-
ing sun and the glare off winter snow can
cause problems.
Even if you prefer to stay out of the sun,
you can still suffer from spring and sum-
mer eye allergies. “It’s very common in
this area. People complain of a rubbing
sensation to the eye, light sensitivity, dry
eyes, foreign-body sensation,” Zapodeanu
said, adding that, in most cases, eye drops
can help.
During the summer, Zapodeanu not only
recommends polarized sunglasses but
suggests you don’t over wear your contact
lenses, because bacteria can grow and an
infection can form.
When it comes to overall eye health, “We
