2012 Yard, Garden & Patio Show
February 17 - 19, 2012
Oregon Convention Center
T
he “Seven Gardens of the World”
are in keeping with the 2012 Yard,
Garden and Patio show’s 2012 theme:
Think Global, Garden Local.
The showcase gardens will be the
single largest feature of the show and
will include design influences from such
diverse locales as China, Pompeii and
Persia.
“The Seven Gardens of the World rep-
resent a dramatic departure for the Yard,
Garden & Patio Show,” said Allan Niemi
of the Oregon Association of Nurseries.
“But they will show how global influ-
ences can truly enhance a local gar-
den. These are sophisticated designs
that can be applied to virtually any
garden space.”
The Seven Gardens of the World include:
Chinese Garden
Dennis’ 7 Dees Landscaping
This garden is designed by De Yang,
Dennis’ 7 Dees’ resident landscape
architect from China, who practiced
and taught Chinese garden design
for more than 15 years at Zhangzhou
University in south China before com-
ing to Oregon with his wife in 1998.
According to Dennis’ 7 Dees’ Corey
Verch: “Our intention is to hold true to
the many delightful symbolic nuances,
as well as the five-element format
of rocks, water, plants, architecture
and literary inscriptions of an authentic
Chinese Garden. This produces a huge
challenge; the reality is that obtaining
authentic materials from the other side
of the globe for construction is both
time- and cost-prohibitive. So we will
represent authenticity with product and
material choices more readily available
here in the Pacific Northwest. That
way, we can truly present our Chinese
Garden as a completely possible design
idea for those in our marketplace to have
something quite different, meaningful
and beautiful.”
Garden of Pompeii
FroeberLand Landscape Architecture /
Showscapes Inc.
FroeberLand’s Jeff Froeber, says this
is a Roman-themed garden, complete
with a pool/fountain with a fire bowl
and raised planters within; a boxwood
labyrinth; cobblestone pavers; curved
trellis with columns; a small Parthenon
structure; statues and colorful pots; large
trellis and period-accurate fencing; and
slab basalt benches.
“We have designed a garden to
showcase the Roman style of the past,
but with materials that relate to today’s
modern outdoor spaces,” Froeber says.
