FESTIVALS &
EVENTS of 2013
WASHINGTON STATE’S
Festivals and events play an important role
in a community’s livability, economics, and the
development of the state’s tourism industry.
Special events will give people a reason to
visit your community. It could be to attend
antique fairs, cook-offs, car shows, sporting
events, or even a Spam festival.
Some events define a community’s assets.
The Ski to Sea Race showcases seven dif-
ferent sporting venues – from the top of Mt.
Baker to Bellingham Bay. Outdoor venues
and/or sporting events are one of the favor-
ites of visitors/participants who are specifi-
cally searching for a unique event as part of a
long weekend vacation. The Rock- N- Roll
Marathon in Seattle, Ski to Sea Race and the
Bloomsday in Spokane are three prime ex-
amples in which thousands of people partici-
pate annually.
Events are a clear way to bring a commu-
nity together and increase tourism. This can
be through culinary events displaying their
region’s resources such as the Crab Festival
in Port Angeles, or the Lentil Festival in Pull-
man. There are a growing number of events
hosted by the wine industry, and food and
wine festivals are springing up throughout the
state. Legacy festivals such as Seafair and
Bumbershoot are major contributors to the
economics in their region, and Freedom Fair
in Tacoma is a leading example of how many
communities celebrate their heritage on the
4th of July.
From the tulip fields in Skagit County to
the Walla Walla Balloon Stampede, there is
an appreciation for our state’s assets and cel-
ebrations. The Washington Festivals & Events
Association strives to provide opportunities
for chambers, visitor bureaus, park depart-
ments, municipalities, fairs, vendors, and sup-
pliers with event-specific training, professional
development and networking that will benefit
their events, customers, and community.
WFEA fosters and supports the arts,
cultural heritage, community festivals, sports,
recreation, and tourism by improving the
understanding, recognition and apprecia-
tion of the vital role of festivals and events
in our society. As a non-profit membership
association, WFEA is dedicated to your pro-
fessional development and the promotion of
special events throughout Washington State.
