WASHINGTON COUNTY ARTS GUIDE DECEMBER 2012 – FEBRUARY 2013

any artists
have equated
winter with
melancholy, isolation
and even death. We
prefer John Steinbeck’s
take, offered in
“Travels with Charley.”
“What good is the warmth
of summer,” he asks,
“without the cold of winter
to give it sweetness.”
Indeed, the end of the
calendar, it seems, brings
not only lower temperatures,
but slower tempos. With the
early sunset comes the
chance to slow down, head
indoors and savor the array
of artistic offerings available
in Washington County.
This winter brings more
evidence that culture blooms
year round in Washington
County. From a sleigh load of
holiday shows to the county
museum’s new exhibit space,
there is reason to celebrate
during the cold of this winter.
Encore!
The Washington
County Spring Arts
Guide, which will
include events for
March through May
2013, will be
published at the end
of February.

4 The plot may be
contrived but the music
is divine in Broadway
Rose’s holiday revue.
7 The Washington
County Museum
explores the past and
future in its new space.
8 From a velvet bunny
and Mexican angels to
wool hats and one-third
of Peter, Paul & Mary,
it’s the best darn arts
calendar in the county!
10 A renewed interest
in handcrafted arts
breathes new life into
holiday bazaars.
12 A new mural honors
a girl whose tragic death
sparked a crusade for
better health care.
16 A big grant has
Bag&Baggage poised to
put its roots down even
deeper in Hillsboro.

The fun for the
young, and young
at heart, extends
beyond the holiday
season. Rick
Meyers will mix
historical
information, playful
dialogue and plenty
of audience
participation in his
“Old Time Music
Show” on Feb. 9 at
the Hillsboro
Library.
