are then exhibited in the gallery in
May. Many are sold.
In September, the gallery is
planning its anniversary exhibit and a
month-long celebration,
Higgins said. That month, the
walls will hold a retrospective
of art, newspaper articles and
historic photos that will look
back over five decades of the
gallery.
On Sept. 21, an event will
formally mark the gallery’s
50th birthday.
ISing Community
Choir
In early summer, the ISing
Community Choir hit $100,000
in collected donations. While
its members have been
singing since 2001, the group
formally incorporated as a
nonprofit in 2005 and now
brings 70 people together to
sing and raise money for
other local nonprofits.
The choir holds three
concerts each year, choosing
a different organization to
support each time with donations.
Its May concert was called “ISing
of Animals” and benefited Indigo
Rescue.
“This is the first time dealing with
something that didn’t directly apply to
the human condition,” said Stephen
Galzan, the choir’s artistic director.
Concerts are free, but donations
are accepted. Galzan is thrilled that
the events are open to folks of all
income levels.
“We have quite a few that follow us
that are on fixed incomes, and we are
delighted,” he said. Another benefit of
the donations-only system is that the
house is usually packed.
“Because the concerts are free to
the public, that basically means we
have no room,” noted Galzan.
About $10,000 is typically raised at
each concert. All of the funds raised
go to directly to the recipients,
because the choir covers all of its own
costs even when it travels, Galzan
said.
Funds from ISing are giving Indigo
Rescue a boost, said Heather Hines,
Indigo’s executive director. The dog
rescue group puts on two jewelry
sales each year along with several
other fundraisers.
“If we can have an organization put
on an event on our behalf, that’s
huge,” Hines said.
Other notable arts-related
milestones this year include:
The Hillsboro Community
Foundation (HCF)
launched a
Legacy Endowment Program and
announced its first endowed fund for
Hillsboro Arts and Culture in
October 2012.
The Beaverton Arts Commission
has marked several milestones
within its organization this year: the
10th Annual Beaverton Last
Tuesday Concert series, the 30th
Annual Visual Arts Showcase was
held in November and the fifth
Annual Beaverton Ten Tiny
Dances event will take place in July.
The Beaverton Civic Theatre
, an
all-volunteer group operating in the
Beaverton Library auditorium, is
currently in its fifth season.
The Hillsboro Tuesday
Marketplace
is celebrating its 15th
season.
