2013 CRAWFISH FESTIVAL
Thursday, August 8, 2013

A
s this year’s theme states, the Cen-
tennial Crawfish Festival is Claws
for Celebration — and nowhere is
this better represented than the
yearly Community Parade.
The annual event will feature grand mar-
shal Loyce Martinazzi, a Tualatin native who
will lead the parade down a route that travels,
for a time, down her family’s namesake street.
Martinazzi literally wrote the book on the
city — it’s called “Tualatin...from the Begin-
ning,” which she co-authored with Karen
Lafky Nygaard.
Winner of the 2012 Spirit of Tualatin award,
Martinazzi has done her part to mark the
city’s 100-year anniversary celebration with
pomp and spectacle: Last February, she
teamed up with Sandra Lafky Carlson to
write and direct “You Are There! A Celebra-
tion of the City of Tualatin’s Centennial Year.”
The musical revue cast a colorful array of Tu-
alatin personalities — even City Manager
Sherilyn Lombos — to re-enact the boozy tale
of how Tualatin became an incorporated city.
Martinazzi described the production as a “do-
cu-drama.”
In 1986, she was one of the longtime resi-
dents to found the Tualatin Historical Society,
and currently serves as president on the
board of the Winona Grange, where she
spearheads preservation efforts.
Martinazzi was awarded the 2013 “Spirit of
Tualatin” award by the chamber of commerce
and was recognized for her monthly column
about the city, providing “accurate local histo-
ry and photographs that give the people of
Tualatin a real sense of belonging and com-
munity,” according to the Chamber of Com-
merce.
Speaking of community, everyone is invited
to participate in Saturday’s march, whether
as spectators or as part of the parade. For
those who enter, first-, second- and third-
place awards are given in the categories of
autos, bike riders, drill and dance teams,
floats, horses and riders, novelty displays,
mascots and participating youth organiza-
tions. All categories are judged for the best
use of the theme.
The deadline for entry
is Wednesday, Aug. 7.
Check-in is Saturday,
Aug. 10, at 8 a.m., and
judging begins at 8:30
a.m.
