Francis Barnett “Barney” Prine founded
Prineville, Ore. in 1868. In addition to
building a blacksmith shop, store, and
saloon, in 1871, he became the city’s first
postmaster.
Prineville is the only incorporated popu-
lation center in Crook County. Other com-
munities in this sparsely-settled region are
Powell Butte (to the west), and Post and
Paulina (to the southeast).
Prineville’s colorful past was the scene
of Indian raids, range wars between sheep
and cattle ranchers, and vigilante justice.
