A good working team of draft horses was
worth more than money in the bank in those
days,” she says.
At the time the highway was launched, East
Multnomah County residents thought of it as
the rich man’s road because only the wealthy
could afford automobiles. Julie Stewart,
Gresham, photo librarian for the society, found
a letter in her own family les illustrating the
point. “One of my grandfathers wrote to my
grandmother in Illinois in 1915, ‘Say, Norman
Burwell sure has a swelled head about that
model Ford of his. But I think it’s just a tin
bucket with an engine.’”
Norman Burwell turned out to be Stewart’s
other grandfather, but at the time he was just
a lucky guy whose grandma bought him a car.
But Henry Ford came along building cars
for average Joes and soon even a farmer
could enjoy a jaunt down the marvelous road.
Stewart credits the late Clarence Mershon,
East Multnomah County historian, for making
it clear: “He was the ‘Encyclopedia of the
Columbia Gorge.’ It’s a wonder his brain didn’t
explode with all the facts and information he
had crammed in there... I would sit at those
