If you are not familiar with lupus, you
are not alone; more than 5 million
(estimated) suffer from this disease
worldwide.
Lupus is a chronic,
autoimmune disease
that can damage any part of
the body (skin, joints, and/or organs inside the
body). When a person has lupus, something goes
wrong with the immune system, and it cannot tell
the difference between foreign invaders and your
body’s healthy tissues and creates auto-antibodies
that attack and destroy healthy tissue. The result is
intense inflammation, pain, and damage in various
parts of the body.
There is no cure, and thousands
of Oregonians suffer from this illness.
If you, or someone you know has lupus, let them
know they are not alone, there is hope, there is
support. Molly’s Fund Fighting Lupus is the
Northwest’s leading organization in education and
outreach about the devastating disease of lupus.
The goal of Molly’s Fund is to educate the public
and the medical community about lupus, to push
for earlier, life-saving diagnoses for those afflicted,
and to spur governments and foundations to fund
research toward a cure.
More than 90 percent of people with lupus are
women between the ages of 15 and 45 and it
appears that AfricanAmerican, Latina, Asian, and
Native American women are at greater risk of
getting lupus than Caucasian women. Of course
anyone can get lupus, however about 9 out of 10
adults with lupus are women ages 15 to 45.
Lupus can be a real challenge for those who aren’t
getting the care, treatment and diagnosis they
need. Medicines are expensive, getting a lupus
diagnosis can take years, and in most cases, those
with lupus are in such pain with severe symptoms it
leaves them unable to work, hence having no
health insurance and few financial resources as
well.
