mond, Bend and Prineville and it
should be protected because it’s
so special,” said Gander.
He said there is some resist-
ance to the area being perma-
nently protected as wilderness,
especially from folks living on
the rims of the canyons who are
worried about fire, but FANs
feels that wouldn’t be an issue
since the BLM and Forest Ser-
vice would respond immediately
to any fires in the canyons.
He and his wife Cindy, who is
president of FANs, get down into
the canyons every chance they
get, but feel that there are many
people living on CRR who don’t
hike the trails and fully appreci-
ate the beauty of the area.
In the wintertime, FANs runs
a lecture series — about a show
each month that covers the natu-
ral history of the area. Most talks
are held in the Juniper Room,
which is the main meeting hall
in the administration building on
CRR.
There currently are about 60
members of FANs. Membership
is just $10 per year for an indi-
vidual. You can join by calling
541-771-3267 or go to their web-

“My favorite is the Scout
Camp Trail,” Gander said. “The
views down there are spectacular.
The Otter Bench Trail is very
pretty but for the most part
you’re up on the rim. There are
two steep and rugged trails off
the Otter Bench Trail that take
you down to the river but you
can’t really hike along the banks
once you’re down there.”
Directions to:
Otter Bench Trailhead:
- Travel north on Highway 97 to the
north end of Terrebonne, turn left
onto Lower Bridge Road.
- After 2 miles turn right on 43rd St.
- After 1.7 miles turn left on Chinook Dr.
- After 5 miles (including a steep
descent), go straight onto Horny
Hollow Rd (do not take Chinook back
up the switchback).
- Go 1.7 miles to the end of the pave
ment and park there.
Scout Camp Trailhead:
- Same as above up to Chinook Drive
but after 2.3 miles turn left on
Mustang.
- Travel 1.1 mile and turn right on Shad Rd.
- Travel 1.4 mile and turn right on
Penninsula Drive.
- Travel 3.2 miles and turn left on
Meadow Rd.
- Travel 1/2 mile and turn right on
Scout Camp Trail. Go .2 mile to
trailhead.
Steelhead Falls:
- Take a left off of Highway 97 just
north of Terrebonne onto Lower
Bridge Way and head toward
Crooked River Ranch. At about two
miles turn right onto 43rd. Go about
two miles and turn left onto Chinook
at the "T." In another mile take a left
on Badger. This turns into Blacktail
Drive at the bottom of the hill. Take a
right at the "T" onto Quail just after
the road turns to gravel. In one mile
take a left on River Road for a mile to
the trailhead.
