The
Home Builder Association of Metro Portland’s
Professional Remodelers Organization (PRO)
, which
consists of more than 200 of the area’s top remodelers
and designers, is dedicated to more than just creating
exceptional homes. The group strives to make a
difference in the community, and, in recent years, has
paired with the
Home Builders Foundation
(HBF) to
improve the livability and function of local homeless
shelters and to provide scholarships and mentors for
students working towards construction-related degrees.
Each year, the PRO joins other local companies at the
HBF’s
Painting A Better Tomorrow
volunteer-blitz,
which involves completing minor repairs and painting
projects at area homeless shelters. In addition the PRO
recently completed a two-year labor of love full-scale
remodel at the
Cordero House
operated by
Janus
Youth Programs
in Tigard. More than 90 businesses
and 380 industry professionals donated their time, skills
and product to bring this residential home for at-risk
boys into the 21st century.
Additionally, the PRO contributes to the HBF’s
Scholarship Program
. The PRO’s annual scholarship
supports the educational efforts at local construction
programs and ensures a quality workforce is available
for the industry’s future.
Due to its energy, commitment to the industry,
and dedication to the community, the PRO has been
recognized nationally with 13 prestigious Council
Awards for Demonstrating Remodeling Excellence.
Category wins include Outstanding Community Service
Project, Outstanding Member Services and Education
and Outstanding Public Relations and Promotion

On any given night there are over
6,500 people in the Portland metro area
experiencing homelessness. This includes
single men and woman, families with
children, and young adults. Every night
is a constant struggle to find a safe and
decent place to spend the night.
The HBF directs the philanthropic activities of the local home
building community by leveraging the building industry’s
talent and resources to help homeless care providers maintain
or expand their shelters and transitional housing facilities. In
addition, the Foundation supports the future of the home
building industry by offering educational opportunities,
college scholarships, training, and mentoring for tomorrow’s
workforce. The HBF has provided over $150,000 in college
scholarships to deserving students that is coupled with
mentoring to ensure recipients get a well-rounded industry
experience.
On average, every dollar invested in HBF building projects
produces two dollars of in-kind labor and materials. Resources
leveraged by HBF allow homeless service providers to save
money they can then invest in maintaining or expanding their
program services.
The Foundation’s current project is a full scale, $1.6 million
renovation of a transitional housing facility operated by the
Portland Rescue Mission for homeless men in recovery that
will expand capacity from 14 to 40 treatment beds. Once this
project is completed, space at the mission’s downtown facility
where men currently live will become available for a much
needed homeless women’s shelter.
Despite tough times for the home building industry the HBF,
in partnership with the HBA has sustained its generosity. It is
clearly a testament to the kindness and resiliency of is many
supporters.
