ow efficient is your home? How much
more efficient would it be with the
right improvements? With EPS, an energy
performance scoring tool brought to you by
Energy Trust of Oregon, you can find out.
“An Energy Performance Score (EPS) is
really about providing consumers with more
information so they can make better decisions
for their homes,” says
Andrew Shepard
,
trade ally project manager for Energy Trust of
Oregon.
EPS works like this:
A Home Performance with Energy Star
contractor uses diagnostic equipment to
examine every aspect of your home for
efficiency before a remodel. That contractor
then provides an EPS score sheet that
shows estimated energy consumption and
estimated costs as well as carbon footprint.
The contractor also makes energy-saving
recommendations, such as improved
insulation and more efficient appliances that
could help improve the EPS.
Once the improvements are complete, the
contractor comes in again and performs the
diagnostic tests to provide the new score.
“It really gives homeowners a nice before
and after picture of their homes energy
performance,” Shepard says. Make sure that
you see the Energy Performance Scores that
several of this year’s homes on the Tour of
Remodeled Homes have received.
