Larry Mock
of
Cascade
Custom Remodel & Construc-
tion
went into his kitchen
project for this year’s tour
facing three challenges: a lack
of light, a dated feel and clutter.
Adding a window took care of
the first one, updating finishes
got the second and putting
in a huge amount of custom
storage options — a frying pan
drawer and unique drawers for
mail and other random bits —
tidied up the third.
“People always want more
storage,” Mock says.
And remodels are a great
opportunity to add more space
and storage.
Mitch Stanley,
president of
Stanley Renovation & Design
,
says simply replacing old cabi-
nets in a kitchen can greatly
increase capacity because
today’s cabinets are designed
to take much better advantage
of space. Installing rollout trays
in cabinets allows for easier
access, and custom cabinets or
drawers can also render spaces
that were once wasted — think
voids under stairs, for one —
usable again.
One of the best was to maxi-
mize storage space is to work
with a professional designer or
remodeler to identify exactly
what kind of storage you need.
Mock says his designer,
Deb
Seeley
, spent several hours
with the client doing just that.
Knowing what kind of stor-
age you need will help ensure
that every inch is used wisely.
“We’re always trying to opti-
mize every single space we can
so that no square footage goes
to waste,” Stanley says.
