The right rug can be just the thing
for visually pulling together the
elements of your favorite space.
By NW Rugs
“Do we start with a rug or get the rug last?’
Clients always ask this question says
Michele Iverson
, an Interior De-
signer at
NWRugs
in Portland. To answer the question she explains that
either way works. Use a favorite rug as the basis of the color scheme in a
room. Or… on the other hand, if you add it after you have your furniture
in place, you can use the rug to accent or tie in your existing colors.
Many spaces just need something to visually pull them together. Once
a focal point is established, it suddenly becomes much easier to create a
great design scheme for the entire room. Thanks to their size and variety,
rugs work very well as the foundation for a room’s design. Not only do
they provide lots of different options, but they do so at a very attractive
price point.
Look for good quality natural materials such as wool and silk. A high-
quality wool rug will wear well and even look better over time.
John
Kurtz
, a rug designer, points out that “wool has the capacity to develop its
own patina through exposure to light and air and feet walking on it. It’s
like having a wonderful piece of wood furniture and rubbing your
hand over it every day.”
NW Rugs Interior ReDesigner
Lisa Galligan
recom-
mends that you “Check out our Facebook Rug Guide.
It’s a great checklist for selecting the perfect rug... and, if
you bring in your paint color chips, fabric swatches, a few room
photos and measurements, the selection process is very easy.”
“Clients are becoming more comfortable with using color”, Lisa contin-
ues, when asked about current design trends. “Adding rugs in your home
can be a very simple way to add more color or pop to your room. Over-
dyed rugs are quite popular since the beautiful color of these rugs is differ-
ent from the usual rug colors you normally see in showrooms. These tend
to be more saturated in color, and sometimes quite bright.”
Picking a rug doesn’t have to be difficult. The thing is “there is not just
one perfect rug for any room,” advises
Shervin Sotudeh
, manager at the
Wilsonville Showroom. “With the versatility of rugs, often any number
of different pieces will work equally well. This means you can select what
you love and know it will all work out smashingly.”
