Read the “Bible”:
After
taking her first sampler quilt class
in Berkeley in 1979, Laura Nownes
knew she had found a lifelong
interest. In 1980, she visited a new
quilt shop and met its co-owner,
Diana McClun. Thus began a
friendship which led to the creation
of five landmark books on
quiltmaking, andwhich continues to
this day. Laura is best known for my
her book, “Quilts! Quilts!! Quilts!!!,”
which is referred to by some
industry professionals as “the
Bible” of quiltmaking. She teaches
and lectures local ly and
internationally.
Nownes’ “Going to Market”
original design is becoming one of
her best sellers and she will
demonstrate how to make it for
average beginners at her class. It
includes four different basket
shapes and sizes. It is charming and
can be made in any fabric and color
scheme. The striped handles
provide unity to the design and two
quilt sizes are possible.
“TheBigTumble”—anoversized
version of a classic pattern —
sparkles with a richness of colors
and textures. Nownes will show
intermediate level quilting
attendees how to tame the
challenging y-seam with a new
easier construction to create a
striking quilt. Three size options are
available.
Save the planet:
Rob Appell
with Rob Appell Designs and
FreeworldTextiles—robappell.com
—blends his love for the ocean with
his work as a textile artist and
designer. A few years back, Appell
landed a job in his Mother’s quilt
shop The Cotton Ball in Morro Bay,
Calif. It was there where he found a
fondness forHawaiian shirtmaking.
Shirt scraps make beautiful quilts,
and so does Appell. He learned to
quilt by trial and error, and brings a
masculine touch to the tradition.
And at this year’s expo, he’ll be
teaching several classes, two of
which are “Quilts from the Sea and
Beyond” — a presentation about
how he became a quiltmaker;
“Endangered Species Quilt Project”
— a series of art quilt patterns to
help raise money to support
endangered species.
He’s donating $1.50 per pattern
printed to an endangered species
charity. And Michael Miller Fabrics
will be matching Appell’s donation,
so you know that $3 from every
pattern is going to support
endangered animals. Each quilt
pattern features a different animal
up-close and personal. The quilts
are all set for the fusible appliqué
method and the main color is the
background fabric. Pick from any of
Appell’s 12 patterns and learn his
techniques.
“I specialize in having fun and
making basic techniques and
strategies for design to allow
beginning quilters to create
elaborate landscapes and art quilts,”
he said.
And he’s excited to meet quilters
of all levels at this event.
“I love the people, enthusiasm
and creativity in what I get to do
each and everyday. I also love the
design and color aspects of working
in cloth,” Appell said. “This will be
my first year (at this expo) and I am
super stoked to be included. I love
Portland, andknowitwill be ablast.”
An unforgettable weekend at the quilting expo
