Creating a memory
The OSU Extension Service strives to
find out what the community needs
and wants and our partners &
volunteers work to make it a reality
W
hat better way to experience
North Clackamas but to go
for a hike or walk in our
beautiful forests? You can even plant
trees at Hopkins Demonstration For-
est, just outside of Oregon City.
Mt Hood National Forest
is also an
Oregon icon. More than four million
people come to the forest each year
for play, exercise, learning, connec-
tion to nature and spiritual renewal.
Our forests enrich the quality of life
for the people that live in this area
and come to visit. Locals come to the
forest for many pursuits including
the expression of stewardship values.
Protection of the environment is of
major importance to all Oregonians.
During the 1990s, urban planning
issues took on increased importance
in Oregon. An accelerating growth
rate and reduced local taxing au-
thority have put the squeeze on lo-
cal governments to provide adequate
services for a growing population. Ask
someone from another state for the
first word that comes to their mind
about Oregon, and they’re likely to say
“trees.” There’s a good reason for that:
Oregon has some of the most beautiful
and productive forests in the world,
and it has exported its wood products
to national and international markets
for more than a century.
Tim Delano, a longtime employee
of
OSU Extension Service,
was
thrilled to be part of their 100th
anniversary on July 25th, 2011.
He considers it a privilege to
be involved for eight years with
Hopkins Demonstration Forest
as well. “It’s all about partner-
ship,” Tim explains, “the Exten-
sion Service strives to find out
what the community needs and
wants. Our partners & volunteers
work to make it a reality. Did you
know the Extension Service was
a catalyst for the abundance of
Farmers’ Markets in our area?
And our Master Gardeners are
just a phone call or e-mail away.
Anyone with questions requir-
ing quality answers about food
sources, gardening, safe prepara-
tion practices, as well as environ-
mental questions, can use the
Extension Service as an overall
resource all year round.”
Tim is excited about a new
Extension-based program. “Our
Sea Grant will focus on water and
marine habitat, from the wetlands
to the ocean.” Integrating edu-
cation, sustainability, economic
benefits, and community involve-
ment remain the cornerstones of
Extension projects.
