INTRODUCTION
B
eer. Food carts. Wacky — and sometimes
scary — TV programs.
That’s sort of the thing most people associ-
ate with Portland.
But that’s not all Portland
is about.
There’s an entrepre-
neurial spirit here that
blends artistry, craftsman-
ship and an environmental
awareness into unusual
and practical products.
There’s also a vibe here
that fosters the do-it-your-
self attitude.
Believe it or not, Port-
land is alive with business-
es, both large and small,
that make a significant im-
pact locally and globally.
There are more than 65,237 businesses registered in
Portland and Multnomah County. Between May and
June, nearly 900 new businesses took out city licenses.
That’s what this news section is all about. It’s a cele-
bration of Portland’s entrepreneurial spirit and a very
thin guide to some of the companies that drive that
spirit. It’s by no means a comprehensive list of all the
companies or products created
in Portland.
Newsroom intern Kylie Wray
from the University of Oregon
wrote all the stories in this sec-
tion. Her research was eye-
opening. She had no idea all
these kinds of companies and
products were produced here.
Many people have that same re-
action. But we in the Rose City
have a small secret: We’re real-
ly a bunch of creative dreamers
who provide products to the
rest of the world.
This news section only high-
lights a handful of companies
producing and selling products. Want to read about
more? Check these websites: portlandmade.com and
