I
f the number of yogurt store fronts pop-
ping up all over the Portland area is any
indication, frozen yogurt is becoming
more popular.
Where do most of these yogurt shops get
their frozen yogurt? YoCream International.
YoCream was established in Portland in
1977. It’s headquarters, dairy and manufac-
turing facility were acquired by The Dannon
Co. Inc. in 2010.
YoCream sells frozen yogurt, tart frozen
yogurt, frozen custard, smoothie and frozen
drink mixes to entrepreneurs looking to cre-
ate and run frozen yogurt shops in their
communities.
Russ Tapio, whose father and two broth-
ers run the first Yo Factory frozen-yogurt
shop in Battleground, Wash., and his wife,
Jemina, have always loved frozen yogurt and
they saw a need in the Oregon City area.
Opening last month in the Oregon City
Shopping Center, Yo Factory’s frozen yogurt
is YoCream, an international brand made in
Portland. Russ Tapio said that self-serve fro-
zen yogurt is a great community builder.
“Everyone loves frozen yogurt,” he said.
With its categories of Original, Nonfat,
Lowfat, Premium, No Sugar Added and Tart
varieties, YoCream has 85 different flavors
of frozen yogurt. According to its website,
“All YoCream Frozen Yogurts are carefully
crafted to contain one of the highest counts
of beneficial probiotic live and active yogurt
cultures and exceed the requirements set
forth by the National Yogurt Association.”
YoCream also offers several flavors of soft
serve sorbet.
Not only is YoCream enjoyed here in Ore-
gon, YoCream has a growing list of coun-
tries to which it exports its product. Includ-
ing Australia, Ger-
many, Singapore
and many others.
YoCream has it’s
own tasting room,
frozen yogurt shop
to be exact, at Cas-
cade Station in Port-
land.
According to its
website, YoCream
“opened YoCream
Frozen Yogurt to showcase our products
and educate the public of the benefits of live
and active culture yogurt but not to sell
franchises.” However, through its YoCream
University program, potential frozen yogurt
entrepreneurs can learn about what it takes
to open a frozen yogurt shop, YoCream
products and how to begin.
