This novel tells the story of Jean Patrick Nkuba, a boy with
Olympic dreams in the 800 meter race, and his family as
they struggle to survive the Hutu-Tutsi conflict in Rwanda.
Despite the troubles the characters experience, the novel
celebrates love and unity as powerful forces of hope.

participate in this year’s Lake Oswego Reads program. The
success of the past six years’ programs demonstrates our

schools, businesses and organizations will offer special
programs and festivities connected with

When you walk into a jewelry store and are struck by the beauty and creativity that surrounds you, do
you think about how that jewelry came to be? Most people don’t. Most people don’t know they have the
choice to purchase jewelry and gemstones that are mined and produced with Fair Trade Gemstone proto-
cols that are slowly changing the industry.
Trios Studio of Lake Oswego has embraced this program wholeheartedly. “I had been hoping for 30
years that someone would start changing the way we get our materials,” says Deborah Spencer, co-owner
of Trios Studio. “If people know they have a choice, many will choose to support lifting the lives of others.”
“As more consumers ask retailers if they sell Fair Trade Gemstones, more stores will get on board,” Mary
Wong, another of “the Trio,” said.
Every December, Trios Studio devotes the month to educating people about this choice. They send a portion of
their Fair Trade sales proceeds to the school in Malawi, Africa that the sapphire
and ruby mine built for the village children. When asked what to use the money
for, the school decided to build housing for the teachers. Soon they will be able
to offer a real house, instead of a mud hut, to be better able to attract and retain
teachers for the nearly 1000 kids in this - the only primary school in the area.
